Ways to Keep Your New Puppy Happy and Healthy

април 27, 2019 By liv parmel

Raising a new puppy can be a very fun and rewarding experience. It can also be challenging, as puppies require lots of attention, patience, and love. There are many ways to keep your new puppy happy and healthy, all of which are very important.

Clean and Safe Surroundings

When you bring your new puppy home, you will want to make sure he or she has a clean, safe environment to live in. This should include a soft, clean sleeping area free of potentially hazardous materials and excess noise. You should allow your new puppy to explore its new home as well. This will let your puppy familiarize itself with its new territory. Always keep anything dangerous out of reach from your puppy, as puppies are extremely mischievous creatures. A safe and sound environment will help to keep your new puppy calm and happy.

Quality Food

It is very important to feed your new puppy a quality food. A food free of added dyes, by-products, and artificial flavors will help reduce the risk of food allergies and sensitivity. Also, many cheaper foods can cause ear infections and other health problems in dogs. Starting your puppy on a quality food will help it grow into a healthy, strong dog, and you won’t have to worry about food-related issues. You should provide fresh, clean drinking water for your puppy at all times as well.

how to care for your puppy

Pet Insurance

You may not think of pet insurance as something you need for a new puppy, but it can be a great thing to have. Pet insurance will reimburse you for veterinary bills should your dog become ill or injured. With the rising costs and advancements in the world of veterinary care, this can be extremely helpful. If you are thinking about purchasing pet insurance for your new puppy, there are many places to find pet insurance quotes online. These sites provide you with information and quotes from multiple companies, which helps you choose the right pet insurance policy for your needs and price range.

Veterinary Care

Proper veterinary care is essential to your new puppy’s quality of life. As soon as your puppy is old enough, it should be given the recommended set of immunizations. These immunizations will protect your puppy from serious and often deadly diseases. Your puppy should also be tested for worms, including heartworm. Your veterinarian will then recommend preventative medication to protect your puppy from these parasites. Last but not least, your puppy should be given medication to prevent flea and tick infestation. Always check with your vet to find out the proper age to start administering these medications. If you give certain medications too early, it can seriously harm your animal.

Grooming

You should always give your new puppy a bath when it needs one, as this will keep its skin and coat in good condition. Brushing your puppy on a regular basis is also a good idea. Regular brushing will help prevent mats in its fur and help with shedding issues. If you have a long-haired breed of dog, it is a good idea to get its fur trimmed regularly. Keeping your puppy properly groomed will help to keep it happy and healthy.

Exercise

Puppies have high levels of energy and should be given time to run and play daily. You should also provide your puppy with toys that are appropriate for its age range. This is because puppies are notorious chewers and can choke on things easily. Your new puppy will enjoy having toys of its own to love and play with. As your puppy grows into an adult dog, regular exercise is still a must and will keep your dog in good physical health for years to come.

how to feed your new puppy

Love

Most importantly, your new puppy needs lots of love, affection, and attention. Puppies that have loving, caring homes will grow up to be happy dogs that are well-mannered and obedient. Also, if you give your puppy proper attention, there is less of a chance it will get bored and get into something it shouldn’t. You should never get a puppy if you aren’t ready to give it the love and attention it needs.

If you are thinking of getting a new puppy, you should definitely take these things into consideration. Puppies are fun and loving creatures that require a lot of time and work. If you can provide your new puppy with everything it needs, it should grow into a happy and healthy adult dog that will provide you with years of companionship.

Puppies are very delicate creatures. Therefore, they need special attention and puppy care from you. The first few weeks are very crucial as you’ll need to know exactly what need to be done. You should already found your trusted vet by now and have some ideas of what kind of puppy care you need to perform such as vaccination, cleaning, as well activities to do with them.

when to bathe a new puppy

During the first few weeks, it is advisable not to let your puppy play for a period longer than an hour. Young puppies need plenty of rest as their body has just started to adjust to a new environment and they get tired easily. Just play with them for a while and later place them back in their playpen so they can eat and rest. If they play too much and too long, they will get very tired and this will disrupt their eating pattern. Eventually, it will lead to behavioral as well as health problem in the future. Avoid over-indulging your puppy by giving him too many treats. He will stop eating his nutritious puppy food, gain weight and have less energy.

Also, when you take the young puppy away from their parents, brother and sisters, they will feel lonely and scared. Try to make the first couple weeks as calm as possible for the puppy. Play with them and give them your utmost attention and love. Also, it will be wise not to bring them out to the crowded places or your friends and relatives houses until they grew a little bit older.

There will many setback along the way to care for your puppy but if you persist; You will have a wonderful companion that are loyal, friendly, and cuddly that you can always relies on.

Best Parrots For Beginners, Families and Children

април 25, 2019 By liv parmel

Parrots are alert, intelligent animals that make friendly home companions. For the cost of a cage, some toys and a steady supply of bird seed, a parrot owner will be rewarded with decades of exciting daily activity and a loyal friend.

Each parrot has its own, distinct personality. Getting to know that personality is one of the best parts of owning a parrot. They will spend most of their time watching you and responding to what you do. After awhile they will even learn your routines and comment on your actions.

For instance, a parrot might learn that after work you go to the kitchen, open the refrigerator and get a can of soda. So it will start to mimic the sound a can of soda makes when opened as soon as you get home, like an inside joke.

Pet Parrot

A parrot’s contribution to your life isn’t limited to observant noises. Parrots love to be taken out of their cages and stroked and petted just like other common house pets. You can fill a bowl with water and watch your parrot take a bath. Some parrots even love to watch television and will spend hours happily sitting on their owner’s shoulders doing just that.

A parrots natural instinct is to fly to a different tree every night to avoid predators. To foster this instinct it’s a good idea to rearrange your parrot’s cage every night. The reward is watching your bird make themselves at home and react to their new surroundings every night, often with hilarious results.

Parrots interact with their owners every day to provide excitement, humor and joy.

Best Parrots For Beginners

A Look At The Different Parrot Types

Most of the parrot types we see in pet stores, zoos, or homes, are tropical birds. A fair portion also come from Australia and New Zealand, and a few parrot types are to be found in more temperate climates. One of the few parrot species native to the United States has since been hunted into extinction.

Parrot Families

There are 370 different species of parrot. The parrot consists of three families, one family consisting of the Cockatoo, the second family made up of the various true parrot types, while the third family consists of what are known as the New Zealand parrots.

Many of the more colorful and larger parrots we may come across are native to the Amazon region of South America.

Which Parrot Makes The Best Pet For Kids

Parrots tend to be not very good pets for children because of their nature. For the most part, parrots and children do not mix well. However, there are a few that will fit in with your family and adjust well to children.

The African Grey, another distinct parrot type, are not nearly as colorful as their Amazon-dwelling cousins, but are considered far and away the most intelligent members of the parrot family. While many members of the parrot family can be taught to replicate the human voice, some African Grey have been known to accumulate a vocabulary of several hundred words.

Budgies a perfect pet for kids

The Budgies is a good parrot to have around children. Because of their small size, they do not tend to scare children as easily. The Budgies have an extensive vocabulary as well and can provide hours of entertainment for your family. However, because of their small size they are more delicate that other parrots and this needs to be taken into account as well.

The Meyer’s parrots is good for family with kids

The Meyer’s Parrots, a member of the African Hook bill Parrot species, is a very docile parrot which seems to fit in well in families with children. They have the ability to form long lasting relationships with a number of people rather than just one person like so many other birds. They are calm and sweet, but not shy.

Are Pionus parrots good pets?

Pionus parrots are not well known and don’t attract very much attention, probably because they are not as brightly colored as most other parrots. These parrots are also not loud and obnoxious. While all parrots require play time outside of the cage, Pionus will be content to sit on top of the cage and watch, rather than needing to be involved in the going on around him.

The Parakeet Is A Good Pet Parrot

Another of the better known parrot types are the Budgies, most commonly known as the parakeet. Parakeets are small parrots, often not much larger than a canary. They make excellent pets, and can be trained to talk and to do tricks, which they seem to enjoy. While there are exceptions, parakeets will often not learn to talk if they have a cage mate, and males usually are easier to train to talk than are females.

Parakeets in the home can usually be allowed to fly around inside the house on occasion, although doors and windows should be kept closed during those times. Once trained, a parakeet is not difficult to return to its cage, and often would rather ride around on someone’s shoulder than fly about, a dangerous practice should you decide to step outside, not realizing you have company.

The parakeet is a good pet for children, who may not be able to handle a larger parrot. You can find a lot more on Parakeets, from parakeet names to parakeet care.

The Cockatoo – Pet Parrot

The cockatoo, the one member of another parrot family, is also a good pet. The cockatoo is larger than a parakeet, usually about the size of a robin or a small jay. Cockatoos can also be taught to talk, though do not always seem to learn as quickly or as much as do the parakeets. Most cockatoos one is apt to see are white in color, but they exist in other colors as well, including black.

Cockatoos are also noted for their topnotch, a crest of feathers the raising and lowering of which is very much a part of the bird’s personality.

Other Popular Pet Parrots

types of parrots

One of the most popular birds in America, are Cockatiels. These small parrots are perfect for beginner bird lovers, people with kids and people that live in small apartments.

Parakeets also known as budgies are great too. However, they don’t live as long as they used to due to over breeding. Unfortunately, they quite often develop malignant tumors after only a few years.

Lovebirds, Quakers, and Conures are great choices if you have limited space.

Macaws, Cockatoos and Amazons have beautiful and exotic plumage, are very affectionate and talk.

The biggest hooked beak birds of all times are Parrots. However, they are very aggressive and can give a very serious bite.

Lorikeets and Lories have needs that can be very challenging. When they are in the wild, they love to eat nectar. When they are caged birds, they require a special diets and also special cages to hold their droppings. They can spray up to approximately 6 feet away.

However, there are some people that prefer Lories because of their comical personalities and their devotion.

Where to buy pet Parrot

Once you have decided on the type of bird you wanted you have two options of where to buy them. You can buy them either from a breed or a pet store.

Pet stores are the fast and convenient way to buy birds however usually the employees aren’t very knowledgeable to answer any questions you might have. Also if you buy a bird from a pet store it is impossible to know the age, health or background of the bird.

types of parrots bird

If you buy your bird from a breeder, they are able to tell you anything you want to know about the behavior and care of the bird. They also sell younger birds that are more tame. However, there is never a guarantee that hand fed birds will remain tame. There are some breeders that have cruel practices.

There are thousands of bird rescue groups where you can adopt a bird. These organizations sometimes have actual buildings where you can see the birds, however most of them have foster homes where they care for thousand of parrots that are unwanted.

If you can’t find a rescue organization near you try checking out your local animal shelter. Some shelters that have dogs and cats also have a few birds that are up for adoption.

Pet Parrots Based on Size: Largest to Smallest

Pet parrots definitely come in a variety of sizes to meet every fancy. I don’t know about you, but many people are curious to know the size of particular parrots and their age expectancy before deciding on which pet parrots to think about.

Some pet parrots are very large but if you live in an apartment and want a smaller parrot then it is best to find out which pet parrots are better for apartment dwellers.

I have made up a list that will help you if you are deciding on which pet parrots to look into based on size and life expectancy.

pet parrots based on size

Is a Cockatiel a good pet for kids?

Another option is a Cockatiel. Cockatiels are friendly, sweet and less hyper than other parrots. Because they have less behavioral issues and hormonal issues than other parrots, they are great pets for families with children. They bond well with many different people.

best parrot for beginners

Preserving The Species

There are many more parrot types, and we’ve just scratched the surface by mentioning the better known ones. All parrot types are regarded as exotic birds, and many of the types are endangered. Not all are sweet loving little birds, some are pests, but nevertheless, efforts to preserve the different species are under way and fortunately are becoming more effective as time goes by.

There is still a large illegal trade in the birds in many parts of the world, with some of the larger species being especially threatened. Zoos, and even local organizations are also doing their part, by protecting different species and working to stop illicit trade and marketing of the birds. Hopefully these organizations and groups will continue to be successful, and most of the nearly 400 different species can be saved from extinction.

Traveling Internationally with Your Pet

април 22, 2019 By liv parmel

Traveling with your pet can be a great bonding experience; however, you want to ensure that you can enjoy your vacation while also doing everything you can to make sure your dog enjoys the time off as well. Before travelling with dogs, it is important that you take several things into consideration, such as vaccines, medications, age, etc. For those that truly love their dogs like their own children, this is not a problem.

how to travel with pets

A Few Important Tips That Can Help Guarantee an Enjoyable Vacation with Your Pet:

Before embarking on any vacation trip, visit your veterinarian. Your pet needs to ensure that he is current with all vaccinations. Make sure that you have a copy of up-to-date vaccines in case of an emergency. You may want to speak to the veterinarian about a light sedative in the event that your pet doesn’t do well riding in the car.

If your pet is currently taking any medications, make sure that you bring plenty along with you. You will want to pack a few extra pills just in case you decide to stay longer than you wanted or an unexpected circumstance arises keeping you from returning home on time.

Before you leave home, make sure to create an itinerary, or at the very least, print out maps to pet-friendly beaches, parks and restaurants that you would like to visit while on vacation. You can always do this at the hotel, but it’s easier if you handle it before you actually leave.

Make sure to pack your pet’s favorite food, fresh drinking water, treats, extra collar(s) and leash(es), and anything else that you can think of that might make the experience more enjoyable for your canine friend. It’s always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.

Always carry a photo or two of your pet. Ensure your pet has current tags as well. You never know what can happen in a big city or out in the wild. Be prepared in the event that you and your pet get separated.

Make sure you do your research and understand the pet laws of the city that you are traveling to. Some communities require that certain breeds be muzzled in public while others require that pet owners have liability insurance. To obtain this information, it may be best to call the local animal control office.

Remember, it’s always better to be prepared for any situation than to not be prepared when a situation arises. You are familiar with the way your dog acts and what he wants and needs. Take all of this into consideration when traveling. By doing so, you are more likely to have a memorable vacation.

Traveling with your pets starts getting complicated when you cross country borders. Then it becomes more than just a matter of finding pet friendly hotels or booking a plane ticket for your pet. Because of the concerns of bringing diseases into the country from other places, many countries require an animal to be quarantined upon arrival, or at the very least, to have a health certification from a vet.

how to travel with pets

Tips for Traveling with Your Pets

Traveling into Canada is probably the easiest for Americans who want to travel with their pets. You can go back and forth across the U.S./Canadian border all day with your pets and no one is going to care.

Traveling into the U.K. is also fairly easy, as they have a program there called PETS (Pet Travel Scheme) that was set up to allow people to travel with their pets more easily. As long as certain conditions are met — such as coming from one of the approved countries, or the animal having been vaccinated for rabies, for example — you can bring your pet into the UK without having to quarantine them.

Certain other countries require your pet to have a health certificate, usually from an APHIS Accredited Veterinarian. This verifies to the country that your pet is free of any of the diseases they don’t want in their country, and is a much better alternative than quarantining your pet.

Quarantine may or may not be required, though. Some countries require it only when certain conditions can’t be met, such as providing immunization records for the pet. Other countries require it across the board.

How do You Travel with Pets?

Knowing how various countries deal with pets coming into their country is important if you are planning on traveling internationally with your pet. You may need to plan for it in advance, for example, to ensure that you have all of the requirements (such as a health certificate, or certain immunizations) met before your trip.

You may also need to plan your trip according to which countries will allow you to travel with your pet without quarantining them. Be sure to do all your research ahead of time, so that you can better plan for your trip!

Tips for International Travel with Pet

There are many things that you have to take into consideration when engaging in international pet travel. Most airlines in the world allow for shipping pets internationally, as long as certain rules and regulations are strictly followed.

There are many things that you must take care of before international pet travel can successfully be accomplished. One important thing that is often overlooked is pet microchips. They should have a microchip that meets ISO standards and has a 15 digit number that should show up on all your vaccination certificates. This way your pet can be tracked at all times and you will never have to worry about it becoming lost.

Can You Take Your Pet to Europe with Airlines?

Pet travel to Europe is especially easy since most European countries allow an animal or two to travel with you right in the cabin. Millions of animals travel by air every year, so even though it may sound uncommon it really is not. Every effort is taken by the airlines to make sure your pet is comfortable and safe.

However, each airline does have its own specific requirements that must be followed so make sure you get in contact with them and ask them about all the particulars.

Of course there are times when you will not be allowed to take your pet on board with you, such as cases where it is too large to be stowed underneath the seat. In cases such as this you will have to travel by separate planes and your animal will be treated as cargo. Although this may sound rough, animals are actually stored separately from other baggage in pressurized, weather controlled areas where they will be safe.

As a matter of fact, these days there are actually companies, like pet airways, that specialize in just transporting pets, so you will not have a difficult time finding an airline that you trust to handle this for you.

How Much a Pet Should Be Old to Travel Safely

Finally, here are a few important questions that you will want to take into consideration when shipping pets internationally. For one thing, you have to make sure that your pet is old enough to travel. The USDA recommends that animals must be at least 8 weeks old and weaned before boarding a plane.

Also, in order to make things as easy as possible for your pet, you should do your best to book only nonstop flights to minimize the amount of time that you are in the air.

If you find that you have to move and travel with pet in tow, then there are plenty of things that you need to keep in mind. Moving pets across country can be particularly difficult so it is never something that should be undertaken without first taking the necessary precautions.

The following will help you out in this matter by explaining all the basic steps that should be followed when you travel with pet cats or dogs.

Where should you start when planning to travel with pet dogs or cats?

First of all, you should determine just how you will be getting from point A to point B. Will you be traveling by car, plane, or some other mode of transportation? Your decision here will have a large effect on the plans that you need to make.

If driving, then you will have to prepare your animal for the long drive ahead. If all you have is a small pet travel bag then your pet is most likely not going to be too happy, so you may want to invest in something larger for the trip.

Another important step for pet relocation is to make your hotel arrangements if the drive is going to take you longer than a single day. Instead of waiting until the last minute and just hoping to find a hotel with some vacancies along the way, determine where a good rest stop will be and make your plans ahead of time.

This way you can also call around and find a good hotel that is very accommodating for animals. Having to drive around from one hotel to the next to find one that will allow your pet to stay with you is not a good experience, especially if you are tired.

If you do not wish to drive, then your other main option is to fly. The good news is that there are plenty of air travel options that allow a small pet to travel with you on the cabin. The main stipulation however is that they must be small enough to fit in a small carrier underneath of your seat; if they are not then they will have to travel in a separate compartment of the plane.

In fact, you might even want to fly separately since there are air travel companies like pet airways that specialize in shipping pets only. You can even track their location in real time over the Internet.

pets travel tips

Regardless of the mode of travel, you will find that things will simply go a lot more smoothly when you have done the proper planning ahead of time. Traveling, either by air or the highway can be a stressful experience for an animal, so make sure that you do whatever you can to make them comfortable. Follow these steps and your travel with pet cats or dogs will go well.

Your responsibilities while traveling:

♦Pick up after your dog. If your dog poops at a rest stop or outside of your hotel, pick it up. Dog friendly hotels and businesses will remain so as long as we don’t abuse the privilege.

♦Do your best to keep your dog from going potty in the hotel room. If you are going to travel with your dog, you have a responsibility to make sure he or she gets taken out often enough to avoid messes in the room.

♦Follow local leash laws. If your dog is supposed to be on leash, do it. It’s not worth a ticket. Personally, since I don’t want to have to worry about finding my dog in a strange city, I keep my dogs on a leash at all times when not in the car or the hotel room. It’s just not worth the risk of losing one of them.

♦Know your dog’s limits. Honestly, if you know your dog feels threatened by people wearing funny hats, and a woman with a potentially fear-inducing hat starts walking toward you, turn around and walk the other way.

It’s true — a lot of people don’t like dogs, or can’t handle messes, barking, hair everywhere, etc. That’s why finding dog friendly hotels and businesses can be such a hassle. It’s important for us “dog people” to be fully appreciative of dog friendly businesses, and be sure to act as respectful and responsible as we possibly can.

The clicker gives a trainer a very precise way of letting an animal know when they have done a desired behavior. It is a method that enables a trainer to train or guide an animal by positive reinforcement, rather than through punishment or correction.

What a trainer does during clicker training is condition an animal to respond to the noise of a clicker. They teach the animal that the sound of a clicker means that a reward is coming. They use the conditioned reinforce (clicker noise) to mark the correct movement and back it up with a primary reward (food etc.).

Why Does a Trainer Use a Clicker at All?

A clicker is a far more precise way of marking a desired behavior. It is far faster to “click” than to say the words “good dog” for example.

With a clicker, a trainer can mark the exact second when the desired behavior is done. The idea of clicking is to catch the animal in the process of doing the behavior rather than afterwards. They then can offer the reward.

As the animal gains an understanding of what it is that the trainer is looking for, the trainer is able to use the clicker to modify or shape the animal’s behavior a little bit at a time until the complete desired result is achieved.

how to start dog clicker training

Important Things to Consider in the Dog Clicker Training

In the dog clicker training, the way you perform the training is called operant conditioning and differing from the classical conditioning. In this way of dog training, the dog trainer encourages the animal to behave in a certain way so that animal will feel good to behave in the desired manner.

The encouragement of dog to perform the desired target behavior is fulfilled through

  • Non-verbal signals
  • Verbal signals
  • Clicks
  • Rewards

The rewarding mechanism is very important for the dog clicker training because that is the way dog knows what is desired to do and what is not. One other important fact is that, the reward should always come along with dog doing the desired action so the dog will not be confused whether an action done was desired or not.

When every time a reward comes along, the dog knows it is a good thing to do.

In the clicker training, another important fact is that, dog trainer (in our case, you) will hardly use any aversive control or punishment. The trainer should understand, the dog does not know whats in your mind. The dog has to do a self understanding what should do.

How hard it is to convey a message to another person without telling or writing down something? Dog faces that truth in the training. So, the dog trainer should be sympathetic about the dog and should make the best effort to train the dog without any harm.

In this kind of dog training, corrective actions should also be performed in order to obtain good results. But the animals should not be scolded or make any physical harm just because the dog did not understand what is desired to do.

When the dog is not behaving as desired, what a good thing to do is do a neutral verbal sign to the animal and dog will know some desired action was not performed since the reward did not come along.

What is the Purpose of a Clicker in Dog Training?

The way clicker training happens is a simple concept of rewarding. Every animal understands the concept of reward. Also, the concept of clicker training (operant conditioning) separates the other means of dog trainings e.g. classical conditioning such a way that the dog trainer should have a very good stance in patience because small steps of the dog should be watched and rewarded.

If we go a little bit more in to the training, you have to reward the dog if the dog even progress in a tiny way in to the desired action. For an example, looking at a way of a target that he/she should go is a good sign for a start and should be rewarded to encourage more into the action.

In case of the target behavior is middle or too complex, the total behavior may divide into sub-behaviors and then can train the dog on each successive behaviors.

why train a dog with a clicker

Clicker Training it is Simple but Powerful

When training the dog in successive sub-behaviors or behaviors, a small success is met with a click and also a reward associated for that progress. When the dog behaves on a non-targeted behavior, it will be met with a neutral deterrent and without any reward so that the dog will learn that behavior is not desired and will choose a target behavior over a non-targeted behavior.

The dog can be trained in the clicker training method if that dog has previously trained in classical conditioning too. Researches have shown that the dogs that cross over from traditional training method also produce good results.

The clicker trainer should assist the dog with specially the first few sessions which will usually require between 20 to 50 successful repetitions or successful training cycles.

After the dog has gained a good mastery of the target action, some other Non-verbal signals and verbal signals also can be added to make it more interesting for the trainer and the dog.

Is Clicker Training Effective For A Puppy?

You want your puppy to stop peeing on the carpet or maybe learn to follow you or sit? There are a number of techniques to do that, some more effective than other, but the best one is by far clicker training.

Yes, it is effective and recommended even for puppies. Actually, it can be more effective on puppies than on adult dogs as they are able to learn faster and don’t know much about the world.

Although you can use this method since the dog is very small, don’t overdo it. Keep the sessions short and have fun while you do it. Clicker training for a puppy is popular because you do not hurt the dog in any way, emotionally or physically.

The technique is the same one you use on an adult dog, the only difference being that you will need the type of treats the puppy is allowed to eat at that age.

puppy clicker training

Get the little dog used to the sound made by the clicker and to the fact that it will receive a reward then start clicking and rewarding only for action that is more specific. You can replace the treats with praise sometimes and I am sure you will enjoy that too.

A basic technique is to teach it to sit by placing a treat above its nose so you will practically force it to sit if it wants the treat. Activate the clicker before giving away the treat. Repeat the steps for several days and increase the pauses between the clicks.

You will probably be amazed at the speed clicker training works for a puppy. It is a popular method and you can easily do it yourself at home while having fun with your dog. You can use the technique even after the dog gets bigger.

Dog Clicker Training Tips

Dog clicker training is the use of a small clicker to train a dog through positive reinforcement to act in certain ways. Below are some tips that will help make your clicker training sessions more productive for both you and your dog.

  • Always keep training sessions short. You are better off doing 3 sessions of 10 minutes than a one-half hour session.
  • The timing of the clicker is very important. You want to click during the desired behavior not when it is complete.
  • If you click, you must treat.
  • Clicker training is using small steps to achieve a certain behavior. You have to start by clicking for the basic behaviors that lead to the correct one.
  • Wait until the animal is correctly performing the behavior before adding the verbal cue.
  • Once your dog has a good grasp of a behavior, gradually increase what you are asking your pet to do. For example, once your pet knows a “sit” only click and reward a good sit. Ignore a sloppy one.
  • You should always try to have a clicker and treats handy. If you see a desired behavior you can click and reward.
  • If your pet is not learning as quickly as you think it should, check the timing of your clicks. You want to be sure that you clicking at the right time. It could be that you are clicking too late.
  • Have a variety of different treats available. Use very special treats for the harder tasks.
  • When training any behavior it is best to start by working in a quiet environment. You want as few distractions as possible.
  • Once your dog has a fairly good grasp of a desired behavior change your practice location. You want be certain that your pet understands “sit” is not only for the kitchen but, in the backyard and down the street. The more locations that you can practice in the better.
  • Clicker training is all about rewarding good behavior and ignoring the bad. You do not use punishments when you are clicker training. You always use positive reinforcements.
  • And lastly, always keep sessions happy and light.

What Can Guinea Pigs Eat? A Guide to the Cavy Diet!

април 18, 2019 By liv parmel

If you have recently acquired a guinea pig or you are considering doing so, you are probably wondering the most common question among first-time piggie owners: what can guinea pigs eat?

It is not unusual for people to assume that because this species belongs to the rodent family that it can consume virtually anything and everything it comes across.

Guinea Pig Favorite Foods

Like most other creatures, this specie’s basic requirements are comprised of protein, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a constant, fresh supply of water.

The sources from which these nutrients are obtained is key to a healthy and happy guinea pig pet.

In fact, some foods can be outright toxic to guinea pigs which is why it is extremely important that you understand which foods are safe to give to your pet and which ones should be avoided entirely.

Hay/Grass

Hay and grass should make up a significant percentage of the animal’s diet.

Not only does it provide the fiber that this little guy needs in order to have smooth, regular bowel movements, but hay will also create a delicate balance within the guinea pig digestive tract to ensure that it remains healthy and works effectively.

This animal will frequently chew and grind on grass and hay which is excellent for his or her teeth as they will continuously grow throughout the animal’s life.

Your rodent pet should have unlimited access to some sort of dry fiber; the type that you offer is up to you.

Consider offering your pet a selection of timothy hay and meadow grass as both of these items are well-loved by this species and provide all of the digestive support necessary for this pet.

You may decide to alternate between hay and grass on a regular basis, such as daily or weekly, or you could even offer a 50-50 mixture of grass and hay in order to provide your pet with a bit more variety.

Check his or her food a few times each day.

If the hay or grass becomes soiled or remains damp for an extended period of time, be sure to replace the old selection with a fresh, dry bunch.

Pellets

Even if you were to offer the animal a decent selection of hay, vegetables, and fruit, there is a good chance that your furry friend will be lacking in some essential vitamins and minerals.

It is difficult – even for experienced piggie owners – to provide exactly the right balance of dietary nutrition.

Because of this, pellets are considered to be the second most important element in the guinea pig diet.

Vitamin C is an integral nutrient in the guinea pig diet and most guinea pig pellets are fortified with this essential element.

Rodent pellets can be purchased at any pet supply store. In general, you should feed your guinea pig about one quarter cup of pellets each day.

If you supplement his or her diet with fresh vegetables each day, particularly ones high in vitamin C, you may lower the amount of pellets fed to your pet to one eighth cup.

Be sure to read the nutrition information and feeding guidelines on the pellet packaging to make sure that you aren’t overfeeding or underfeeding your piggie, as some store-bought products contain concentrated amounts of vitamins and minerals.

Pellets should be offered in a clean food dish, preferably one that is mounted to the cage to prevent spills.

Vegetables and Herbs

Fresh vegetables should be offered to your guinea pig periodically, but ideally your little friend will be able to enjoy a few pieces of vegetables each day.

In addition to hay/grass and pellets, guineas may be fed up to one cup of vegetables and herbs daily.

However less should be given on days when your guinea is offered fruit.

Bell peppers, kale, broccoli, turnip greens, and spinach are very high in vitamin C and may be offered to your guinea pig regularly.

When preparing bell peppers for your pet, be sure to remove all of the seeds from the pepper.

guinea pigs diet

Never give this animal chili peppers, jalapenos, or other spicy peppers. Asparagus, cabbage, carrots, parsnips, turnips, cucumbers, celery, yellow and green squash, peas in the pod, watercress/alfalfa, and Brussels sprouts are other safe and healthy vegetables for your guinea pig.

This type of animal also enjoys small amounts of herbs, especially when mixed with other vegetables.

Basil, cilantro, chicory, parsley, dill, lavender, and mint are a few examples of herbs that your furry friend can safely enjoy.

Fruits

Supplementing your guinea’s diet with fruits is a great way to top up his vitamin C levels, but it is important that you offer fruit in small amounts and/or on a less frequent basis.

A pinch of fruit each day isn’t going to harm your guinea but if you choose to offer a small selection of various fruits then try to do so no more than two to three times per week.

Papaya, kiwi, guava, and mango are very high in vitamin c and piggies tend to love them.

You may also provide an assortment of various berries such as strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries.

Elderberries may also be given in small amounts.

Apples (without the seeds), apricot, peaches, pears, and plums are cheap and abundant fruits that can be included in this animal’s diet.

Watermelon and honeydew may also be given although it is best to remove the rind first.

What do Guinea Pigs Drink?

Guinea pigs need a constant fresh supply of plain water in order for them to be happy. Here are a few tips on watering your guinea pig.

• Untreated tap water is not recommended. It can contain chlorine and heavy metals such as iron, which can harm your furry friend.
• Distilled water does not provide any minerals and thus should be avoided.
• Conversely, water that is high in minerals such as calcium should be avoided.
• Bottled water or water that has been filtered from the tap are the best options.
• Use a chew proof water bottle and clean the nozzle regularly.

If you follow these guidelines your cavy will stay happy and hydrated!

Foods Never to be Given to Guinea Pigs

Some foods are prone to causing digestive upset, stomach ulcers, or even outright toxicity in this species. Some foods, such as pineapple, citrus fruits, beets, cherries (without the pit), eggplant, leeks, radish, and sweet potato may be fed to rodent pets on a rare basis – meaning no more than once a month.

You should never feed fruit pits, apple seeds, potatoes, or potato vegetation to this type of rodent as they can be toxic and even deadly.

Rhubarb, rhubarb leaves, and tomato leaves are also unsafe for piggies to consume.

Obviously you should never feed your fuzzy companion foods that are in any state other than fresh (meaning cooked, pickled, or tinned).

Nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, corn, dairy products, eggs, and meat should also never be offered.

Being a responsible pet owner means doing the appropriate research necessary to gain a solid understanding of what you can and cannot offer the guinea pig.

The sections above contain detailed lists of foods that should be given regularly, in moderation, rarely, and not at all.

However if you come across a food not included in this article that you would like to offer your fuzzy family member, the best course of action would be to call your veterinarian to determine whether the food is safe for this species.

Understanding Cat Behavior

април 16, 2019 By liv parmel

If you are the proud owner of a cat, you already know about the beauty of the species’ demeanor and elegant nature. Because cats retain much of their evolutionary ancestors’ instincts and dispositions, many owners are faced with cat behavior problems. Many cat owners find themselves baffled by their furry friends’ actions and are constantly in search of ways to correct their destructive or undesirable behavior.

However, most will try to implement corrective action without taking the vital first step of understanding cat behavior. Obviously, being aware of cat behaviors and what they mean is critical in keeping your feline companion under control.

Common Cat Behavior Problems

Climbing is among the biggest complaints of all cat behavior problems. Part of the allure of domesticated cats is the primal demeanor inherited from their wild (and much larger) ancestors. That being the case, cats love to perch on high and intently observe the world around them. Unfortunately, this instinct may come at a cost to your household.

Whether it be scratching furniture, picking up dust and dander, or knocking over fragile objects, your cat can do some serious damage en route to their lofty hideout.

The most effective way to prevent climbing is to eliminate access. Try spacing your cat’s launch platform further from their desired spot. Alternatively, you can block their path with furniture, heavy pots or vases, or anything else which blinds their approach. Remember, if your cat cannot clearly see their path and their landing point, they will usually not attempt their climb.

Understanding cat behavior also invariably turns to scratching. Scratching is another primal instinct in cats which is completely natural. Still, you simply cannot afford to have your furniture shredded to pieces, and of the many cat behavior problems owners encounter, this is often the most important one to correct.

Try placing a scratching post in the vicinity of your feline’s habitual scratching area. Rub the post with catnip, or play games with your kitty near the post and reward them when they use it. Scratching is a instinctive activity used to mark territory, so once you get your cat acclimated to using the scratching post, your furry pal should head back for more.

Cat Litter Behavior Problems

Another one of the significant cat behavior problems is inability to use the litter box. House training is a critical step in raising your feline, and doing so can make life much easier on both of you. Here again, understanding cat behaviors and what they mean is crucial. Cats relieve themselves in areas which they are comfortable.

If you are having trouble getting your feline to use the litter box, try relocating it to an area they are fond of soiling. Alternatively, you could put the litter box in a quieter or more secluded area. Like humans, your cat needs a degree of privacy. Having the litter box in a loud or highly trafficked area may discourage your cat from using it.

Although common, cat behavior problems do not have to ruin your home or your relationship with your feline companion. Understanding cat behavior is the most important thing an owner can do, as this knowledge can make correction much easier. Always remember to stay determined and disciplined. With a little bit of effort, your cat will be much easier on your household, allowing you to enjoy their friendship to the fullest extent possible.

Cat Behavior Training

There many reasons why you need to practice cat behavior training. Some of the issues with cat behavior might be urinating outside of the litter box, sharpening their claws where they are not suppose to, climbing planters or curtains, biting, spraying or jumping on tables and counters.

These are all issues that will require behavior training as early as possible. As soon as you see the problem develop, you need to correct the problem before the cat becomes accustom to doing it all the time. Cats are like people, if they are allowed to do something more than once without punishment, they will continue to do it.

Once a cat develops behavior problems, you need to start teaching them some cat training to correct the problem. If your cat uses your furniture or walls to sharpen their claws, you are going to need a cat scratching post where you can take them when you catch them scratching somewhere they are not suppose too.

Importance of Early Cats Training

The earlier you teach them the proper place to scratch, the better they will learn. Consistency is vital when cat behavior training is involved. They can be stubborn if they have been allowed to do something for a long time.

cat behavior training

Curtain climbers will need an alternative to curtains. A cat condominium will give your cat somewhere else to climb instead of the curtains or plant hangers. Cat training for this problem will more than likely start as soon as you bring home the new kitty.

Kittens are adorable, but as you know, they can be a handful. They are mischievous and love to climb and explore. With the proper cat training, you can teach them right from wrong. You will find that training the kitten or an older cat will be a challenge that you have to stick with to work.

Cat training might also include teaching the cat to stay off counters. This means, you cannot allow them on the counter sometimes and not at other times. You have to be consistent when training cats. If you give them the upper hand, they will take every inch.

They are the cutest things around, but they are independent as well. They will wait for you to leave the room and try it again. Cat behavior training can be accomplished, you just need determination and a little time to train them in order to see results.

Cat Urine Issues

Cat urine issues are a very common and very frustrating experience for the cat owner. Cat urine issues come in many forms, with different solutions.

Medical Causes of Cat Urine Issues:

Some urine problems have to do not with behavior, but with feline urinary tract infections or feline lower urinary tract disease. Common signs of these an increase in the frequency of urinary or painful urination, possibly with some blood.

Male tom cats are prone to have their urethras plugged with mucus or stones, in which case this is a life threatening emergency which you should see your vet right away.

cats don't use litter box

Behavioral Causes of Cat Urine Issues:

The cat doesn’t like the litter box position, size, odor, etc. If it is one of these causes then you need to take the appropriate steps to alleviate them. Possible solution: Move the litter box, clean the litter box more frequently, place more litter boxes, or get a larger litter box.

Some cats have more anxiety than others which is another reason some cats don’t use the litter box. These could be due to a change in the household routine, a new baby, a new house guest, or a new house. Possible solutions: isolate the cat for a few days, or use Feliway.

Some cats like to mark their territory which is called marking or spraying. Although mostly intact cats to this even neutered cats can do this. Possible solutions: Have your cat neutered, use feliway to help calm them, or block the bottom of screen doors or windows to avoid them seeing other cats.

Training Your Cat to Use the Litter Box

One of the more challenging parts about pet ownership can be those first few weeks and months when you’re trying to potty train your animal. One thing to keep in mind with cat litter box training is that positive reinforcement is the best approach possible. Every time your animal successfully uses the little box, reward him with a treat or some positive attention.

Also keep in mind that you’ll have to be flexible as well. For example, if your cat is having a particularly tough time getting trained, maybe it’s not the cat’s fault.

Try changing out the litter for something that more closely replicates sand or soft dirt. This usually has a higher success rate than hard clay options. Also, use common sense. Make sure the box is cleaned regularly. If the box is full of waste or it smells unpleasant, your cat is less likely to use that box. And never use harsh chemicals or antiseptics to clean the box itself. These can also have harsh smells that will turn your cat away.

Six Tips For Stopping Dog Chewing

април 11, 2019 By liv parmel

The following tips are helpful for stopping dog chewing

Do you dread coming home from work because you can’t stop your dog from chewing everything in the house while you are gone? Stopping dog chewing can be done if you just take the time and put some effort into it. Dogs are born with the desire to chew and it actually fills a health need so you don’t want to stop it completely.

What you do need to so is set some boundaries so your dog knows what he can and can not chew. While dog chewing is very frustrating to you to deal with, you can solve this problem by providing your dog the proper training and making your house more dog friendly. Or should I say “dog proof?”

Make Your House Dog Proof

Keep clothes and shoes off the floor by storing them in your closets and cabinets. If your dog can not see or reach your shoes and clothes he can not chew them. This rule applies to everything in your home that you don’t want chewed by your dog. A list would include garbage, the remote control to your TV and other gadgets, books, cell phones, cameras and anything else your dog could chew on if he finds them. Store them away to remove all ability from your dog to find and chew them. Stopping dog chewing problems can be helped by following this simple step.

Keep Food Properly Stored so the Dog Can Not Get Into it

Don’t leave food setting out where it can tempt your dog to get into trouble. Don’t leave it on the table or counter top, thinking your dog can’t reach it. You will be amazed at the way your dog will find to reach something he wants to eat or chew. If you don’t have time to wash your dishes before you leave at least rinse them off as you place them in the sink. Even better would be to rinse them and place them in the dishwasher. Never feed him left overs or the food that you are eating. Have one place in the house where he is feed and water and use that every time you feed him.

Create a Holding Area for Your Dog When You are Away From Home

This can be in a room such as the laundry room, or if the dog is small enough, can be a holding crate or case. Even if you use a room to hold your dog away it is a good idea to have an open crate or cage in it with the dog’s blanket. This will give him a place of security while he waits for you to come home. Never give your dog the freedom to roam your home when you are not there. However when you are there you should allow the dog normal freedom so you can teach him the boundaries that he can not cross. Stopping dog chewing problems involve teaching your dog what is acceptable behavior to you.

Provide Your Dog Some Alternatives to Chew Other Than Your Clothes or Household Belongings

Stopping dog chewing of everything around him can often be solved by buying him some chewable toys and teaching him to use these toys when he has the urge to chew something. However don’t give him dozens of toys to choose among, just give two or three toys at a time. It is OK to have a variety of chew toys, just don’t give them to him all at once but alternate them over the days so he always has something different to play with from day to day.

Exercise Your Dog Every Day

A dog needs exercise and if he does not get it, he will tear up the house in his nervous energy. Take him for a walk every night when you return home and if possible, take him out for a short walk in the morning before you leave for work. Spend some time playing with your dog each day so life does not become too boring for them. Use this time to teach your dog what is and is not acceptable behavior with you.

Say „No!“ Your Dog

When you are home watch your dog closely and every time you see him start to do something wrong, immediately correct him by saying “No!” in a loud voice and stopping his actions. Stopping dog chewing can only work if you catch the dog in the act of chewing. So when he starts to chew something, give him one of his toys to chew so he learns not to touch your property and what property belongs to him.

These are just a few tips on how you can teach your dog the rules. Consider buying training materials that will lay out a procedure for you to follow as you teach your dog the rules of your house. Stopping dog chewing problems is possible if you are willing to work at it with love and patience. A final alternative for stopping dog chewing problems is seeking a professional dog trainer if the process is too much for you to handle.

Stopping Dog Chewing Furniture

Stopping dog chewing on furniture can be a major problem. However stopping dog chewing on furniture can be done if the dog owner is willing spend some time and effort training their dog in acceptable behavior patterns. Your dog may be chewing on furniture for a variety of reasons, some physical and some behavioral. You will need to determine which pattern fits your dog before you can achieve a solution.

Stopping Dog Chewing Furniture: Physical Reasons

If your dog is a puppy then chewing on furniture and other objects may be a teething problem as the dog’s teeth are developing. If your problem is stopping an older dog chewing on furniture then the dog may have dental problems which is causing this activity. In this case the first step would be to take your dog to a vet to ensure that dental problems is not causing your dog to chew on furniture. The vet may be able to provide a solution for stopping dog from chewing furniture.

If the dog is a puppy then you will need to take steps to redirect the dog’s natural desire to chew on objects as the teeth develop. You need to buy teething toys that the dog can use and direct their activity to the toy if you find them chewing on anything other than the toy. Then as the puppy chews on the toy, praise him for chewing on the toy. Teach him chewing on the toy is acceptable behavior while chewing on anything else in the house is unacceptable.

Stopping dog chewing furniture or other objects is achievable if you are willing to take the time to train your dog by telling him NO! in a loud voice when you catch it chewing furniture or other items, then handing him his chew toy to chew on and providing him positive attention as he chews on the toy. Your dog wants to please you and will soon learn that you will praise him only if he chews on the chew toys you provide him.

dog chew on furniture

Stopping Dog Chewing Furniture: Behavior Reasons

Your dog may chew on furniture or other items when you are not around due to boredom or loneliness.

When your dog chews on furniture or other items for behavior reasons you need to re-direct your dog’s chewing each time you catch him chewing an inappropriate object. You can startle him with a loud noise or tell him NO! in a loud voice to distract his attention away from whatever he is chewing and then immediately provide him with a chew toy to chew on. Then as he chews on the chew toy, pet him and praise him for being a good dog. Keeping your dog occupied by playing with these types of chew toys will usually stop chewing on your furniture.

If you are going to be away from your house, you need to confine your dog to a secure area that does not contain any objects you do not wish him to chew. Instead have two or three of his favorite chew toys in the confined area so that he may chew on them while you are gone. This helps create the habit of chewing on those particular items so he will began to seek them when he wants to chew on something.

Dog Chewing Normal Activity

The first thing that most people must understand about dog chewing furniture is the fact chewing on objects is a natural dog behavior. Which Kind of Goldfish to Choose for a Pet

април 8, 2019 By liv parmel

If you’re interested in caring for a goldfish, you might want to start thinking about the different types of goldfish and which ones you prefer to keep. Contrary to popular belief that goldfish all look alike with the shimmering, gold scales and flowing tails and fins, there are many different variations and each type has a slight variation from the usual goldfish look.

How to Identify Goldfish Types

To make the classification easier, there are types that are identified based on appearance. The types of goldfish are the following: single tailed goldfish, double tailed goldfish, double tail with dorsal fin goldfish and the double tailed with no dorsal fin goldfish.

The Single Tail Goldfish

Comets, Commons and Shubunkins fall under the single tailed goldfish classification. The species under this classification usually have slender bodies and a single tail that varies in size.

The Double Tail Goldfish

The double tailed goldfish has Watkins goldfish and Jikins Goldfish classified under it. These types of goldfish have slender bodies just like the single tailed goldfish. However, the distinction comes in their tails where it looks like it was divided making it appear as if it has two tails.

The double tailed with dorsal fin goldfish, unlike the previous types, have egg shaped bodies. Examples of goldfishes under this classification are Fantail, Pearlscale, Oranda, Ryukin, Moors Telescope, Pompom, Demekin, Veiltail. Aside from being egg shaped, this type possesses single or double dorsal fins.

The double tailed without dorsal fin goldfish have egg shaped bodies but does not possess any dorsal fins. Examples under this type are Bubble Eye Goldfish, Phoenix Eggfish/Egg Goldfish, Celestial goldfish and Lionhead goldfish.

As you can see, with these many different types of goldfish, you will never get bored with your goldfish aquarium!

goldfish types that are identified based on appearance

Bubble Eye Goldfish

The bubble eye goldfish is easily recognized by the bubbles around it’s eyes. As its name implies, it has two fluid-filled sacs in its eyes that resembles a bubble. The sacs are made up of a membrane that easily breaks when punctured. Interestingly, the punctured sacs grow back. Although the sacs appear to be burdensome to the activities of the bubble eye goldfish, they do not cause any disadvantage at all.

Just like all goldfishes, the bubble eye goldfish posses the distinctive flowing tails and fins. They also come in metallic, shimmery scales. There are some bubble eye goldfish that has patterns all over its body such as red and white; and gold and calico combinations. Some come in plain colors such as red and black.

Bubble eye goldfish eye

They have the same needs than that of other types of goldfishes. However, they require greater degree of care when it comes to their eyes. As mentioned earlier, the bubble eyes can be punctured easily. There’s a need to get rid of sharp decorations placed inside the tank. It’s also not a good idea to place them together with aggressive types of fish.

The average size of the bubble eye goldfish is six to eight inches. The bubble eye gold fish looks like a normal goldfish at birth. The sacs will only start growing and later on become noticeable at three months.

Paying attention to the details inside the tank is important when caring for this type of goldfish. Clean the tank regularly and maintain a temperature not more than 90°F.

The Oranda Goldfish

Many people think that all goldfishes all look alike. This is partly true. They all share a specific look that sets them apart from all other aquarium pets. However, there are many types of goldfish available and each bears a distinct characteristic.

One of the more common types of goldfish is the Oranda goldfish. The Oranda goldfish is known for its distinctive hood called the wen. The wen is a fleshy growth on the top of its head. It is most appreciated when fully developed in two to two and a half years.

The scales of the Oranda goldfish are large and round. It shimmers as it moves. It has a long, flowing tail that fans out when it stops. It grows approximately from six to seven inches.

This kind of goldfish is referred to as the “flower of the water” in China and “Oranda Shishigashiri” in Japan.

Care for the Oranda Goldfish

Being omnivorous in nature, the Oranda Goldfish can thrive from the nutrients it could gain from any type of fish food such as flakes and worms. This type is not very tolerant to pollution. Regular maintenance and care such as cleaning and filtration is necessary. Otherwise, the goldfish will have low chances of survival. Some illnesses common to this type of goldfish are parasitic such as flukes, lice and anchorworms.

Proper care for the Oranda Goldfish is a must. Feed quality fish food and properly maintain the aquarium environment to prolong the life and enhance the appearance of the Oranda Goldfish.

The Black Moor Goldfish

The black moor goldfish is a great addition to any aquarium. Its eye catching black and velvety color makes for an interesting view. Although the black color may fade as the black moor ages, they stay with the same color for a long time. There are very few variations of black moor. They vary in terms of caudal fins.

Goldfish of this species has large eyes that give them slight vision impairment and is also prone to damage. This makes it difficult for them to find food. That’s why the best thing to do is to keep them with fishes that have the same vision impairment so that feeding time will not be a problem later on. Otherwise, fishes that swim faster will consume all the food and the black moor will be left with nothing.

Black Moor Goldfish Care

Black moors feed on the same food as other goldfishes. They are also omnivorous. Feeding it with quality flakes and pellets will give it sufficient nourishment but occasional feeding of brine shrimps and bloodworms will also nourish your black moor. Vegetables cut in small pieces can also be fed to the black moor.

Of course, aside from keeping the tank clean and safe from sharp and spiked decorations, the black moor will do well in an aquarium with a temperature of 65-72 degrees F. Aquatic plants are better alternatives for decorations inside the tank.

If given the proper care, the black moor can grow for approximately ten inches. It has an estimated life span of twenty-five years.

The Fantail Goldfish

The fantail goldfish is best identified by its tail and fins. Its tails and fins are noticeably large and split. The split in the tail is believed to be the indicator of the breeding quality of the fantail goldfish. The more splits the tail has, the better.

This type of goldfish does not require much maintenance, which makes it a good choice for beginners. It is known to survive colder temperatures. They can be kept either in indoor tanks or in outdoor ponds. If chosen to keep in an aquarium, make sure that there is sufficient space for the goldfish to swim in. They should always be kept with other fishes.

Fantail Goldfish Breeding

If you’ve decided to breed your fantail goldfish, make sure that you provide breeding grounds such as grained beds and weeds as the parents have the tendency to eat their young. Increase chances of survival by adding java moss in the tank. Giving variation to their diet makes breeding optimal. Gradual changing of water temperatures can also trigger breeding in fantail goldfish as it will simulate changes in season.

Feeding the fantail goldfish is not much of a problem. Just like all other types of goldfishes, they will eat anything. Feed them with flakes, pellets, vegetables, worms and brine shrimps. A good diet will prolong the life of your goldfish and also increase its breeding condition.

Generally, this type does not grow as big as other types of goldfish. The maximum size of the fantail goldfish reaches only six inches.

5 Ways to Increase the Life Span of Guinea Pigs

април 6, 2019 By liv parmel

On average, the life span of guinea pigs is between four and eight years. However, you have to keep in mind that, just like any living creature, its longevity greatly depends on how healthy and happy the cavy is. Showering it with proper attention and food will do wonders to keep your cavy alive for a long time.

Bad nutrition, heat stroke, infections, parasites and ring worm can also cause the premature death of your cavy. Although very rare, the longest recorded lifespan of a guinea pig is 15 years. However, as far as small house pets go, they have a relatively long life span.

What Are They?

Also known as the cavy, a guinea pig belongs to the rodent family and is a popular household pet. Weighing between 700 and 1200 grams and measuring up to 25 centimeters in length, guinea pigs are known to thrive in groups of two or more. Their gentle demeanor and small size make them the perfect addition to any home. Cavies originated from South America and, as far as research shows, are domesticated descendants of a similar species and hence cannot be found in the wild.

How to Increase Their Life Span of Guinea Pig

There are several things you can do to increase the average life span of guinea pig. From ensuring it does not get too stressed to feeding it the right balance of nutrients and minerals, there are many things you can do to ensure your cavy will live a long and happy life.

Give It Sufficient Living Space

Animals need space to thrive and cavies are no different. You have to prepare and maintain a minimum of 10 square feet of living space for two cavies. Not only will sufficient space give them their own territory, it also gives them enough room to exercise. Exercise will prevent the animals from suffering obesity, gas buildup and excessive bloating. Some pet owners go the extra mile and offer entire rooms for them.

However, to simplify things, cages with solid wire mesh floors are a common choice and are perfectly acceptable. Be sure to line the cages with newspaper or wood shavings to prevent it from injuring itself. The more cavies you intend to raise, the larger the cage has to be. Enough space to roam about will discourage them from fighting and hurting each other.

Raise Them in Pairs

As social creatures, cavies do well living in groups of two or more. It is advisable to keep cavies of the same sex together. If you want to keep one of each, ensure at least one is spayed or neutered. A reason for this is because you do not want the female to become pregnant. Although breeding them is a common activity, you should keep in mind that at least one in five females will die from complications either during pregnancy, birth, or post-pregnancy. Living in pairs will also encourage exercise and play which helps with blood circulation and the prevention of obesity.

Practice Good Hygiene

If you do not regularly clean your guinea pig’s cage, you will be inviting infection and bacteria to flourish. Bumblefoot is a common infection contracted by these animals. Bumblefoot is an inflammatory reaction that affects the feet of rodents who live in cages that have not been cleaned for a significant amount of time. Because they are generally messy creatures, they tend to jump into their feces and urine, mixing them up with their bedding and food. Besides cleaning the cavy’s cage regularly, you can also opt to bathe your pet once every three months.

Depending on your pet, it will either love it or hate it. Either way, prepare a towel, guinea pig or rabbit shampoo, a hair dryer and a brush. Fill up a sink with warm water and gently hold your cavy under the gentle flow of running water. Avoid getting water onto its face or into its ears. After wetting its body, work the shampoo into its fur. Rinse it off once you have lathered its entire body. Wrap your cavy in the towel and absorb as much water as possible. Finish up by blow drying its fur and brushing it to work out the kinks and tangles. As an alternative, you can also use a washcloth and wipe it with warm water.

Be Sure to Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes

Guinea pigs are rather delicate creatures and do not do well adjusting to drastic temperature changes. They are also prone to heat and sun strokes so do not place your pet’s cage anywhere with direct sunlight. Rather, opt for somewhere with indirect sunlight or a bright location that gets some morning sun. You should also ensure that your pet’s space is draft free as cavies are prone to catching respiratory infections.

Also, ensure the area the cage is placed has a stable, low level of humidity and heat. Placing the cage in the laundry room or bathroom is a bad idea. They should be housed indoors as research has proven that indoor cavies tend to live longer than those that are housed outdoors.

Offer It Proper Nutrition

As a pet owner, you are responsible for the health of those under your care. It should be your main goal to ensure your pet gets sufficient nutrients to live a long and healthy life. Offering your pet proper nutrition is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure its life span of guinea pig increases. Fresh water and quality food are the backbones of a guinea pig good diet.

Cavies should be fed a diet rich in calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and vitamins A, C, D and E. As cavies are herbivores, feed them quality pellets, grass hay and fresh fruits and vegetables. Some great examples are leafy greens, carrots, celery and apples. Feed them more vegetables than fruits as the latter contains high levels of sugar which, when not controlled, can prove to be very unhealthy to guinea pigs.
