Understanding Cat Behavior

април 16, 2019 By liv parmel

If you are the proud owner of a cat, you already know about the beauty of the species’ demeanor and elegant nature. Because cats retain much of their evolutionary ancestors’ instincts and dispositions, many owners are faced with cat behavior problems. Many cat owners find themselves baffled by their furry friends’ actions and are constantly in search of ways to correct their destructive or undesirable behavior.

However, most will try to implement corrective action without taking the vital first step of understanding cat behavior. Obviously, being aware of cat behaviors and what they mean is critical in keeping your feline companion under control.

Common Cat Behavior Problems

Climbing is among the biggest complaints of all cat behavior problems. Part of the allure of domesticated cats is the primal demeanor inherited from their wild (and much larger) ancestors. That being the case, cats love to perch on high and intently observe the world around them. Unfortunately, this instinct may come at a cost to your household.

Whether it be scratching furniture, picking up dust and dander, or knocking over fragile objects, your cat can do some serious damage en route to their lofty hideout.

The most effective way to prevent climbing is to eliminate access. Try spacing your cat’s launch platform further from their desired spot. Alternatively, you can block their path with furniture, heavy pots or vases, or anything else which blinds their approach. Remember, if your cat cannot clearly see their path and their landing point, they will usually not attempt their climb.

Understanding cat behavior also invariably turns to scratching. Scratching is another primal instinct in cats which is completely natural. Still, you simply cannot afford to have your furniture shredded to pieces, and of the many cat behavior problems owners encounter, this is often the most important one to correct.

Try placing a scratching post in the vicinity of your feline’s habitual scratching area. Rub the post with catnip, or play games with your kitty near the post and reward them when they use it. Scratching is a instinctive activity used to mark territory, so once you get your cat acclimated to using the scratching post, your furry pal should head back for more.

Cat Litter Behavior Problems

Another one of the significant cat behavior problems is inability to use the litter box. House training is a critical step in raising your feline, and doing so can make life much easier on both of you. Here again, understanding cat behaviors and what they mean is crucial. Cats relieve themselves in areas which they are comfortable.

If you are having trouble getting your feline to use the litter box, try relocating it to an area they are fond of soiling. Alternatively, you could put the litter box in a quieter or more secluded area. Like humans, your cat needs a degree of privacy. Having the litter box in a loud or highly trafficked area may discourage your cat from using it.

Although common, cat behavior problems do not have to ruin your home or your relationship with your feline companion. Understanding cat behavior is the most important thing an owner can do, as this knowledge can make correction much easier. Always remember to stay determined and disciplined. With a little bit of effort, your cat will be much easier on your household, allowing you to enjoy their friendship to the fullest extent possible.

Cat Behavior Training

There many reasons why you need to practice cat behavior training. Some of the issues with cat behavior might be urinating outside of the litter box, sharpening their claws where they are not suppose to, climbing planters or curtains, biting, spraying or jumping on tables and counters.

These are all issues that will require behavior training as early as possible. As soon as you see the problem develop, you need to correct the problem before the cat becomes accustom to doing it all the time. Cats are like people, if they are allowed to do something more than once without punishment, they will continue to do it.

Once a cat develops behavior problems, you need to start teaching them some cat training to correct the problem. If your cat uses your furniture or walls to sharpen their claws, you are going to need a cat scratching post where you can take them when you catch them scratching somewhere they are not suppose too.

Importance of Early Cats Training

The earlier you teach them the proper place to scratch, the better they will learn. Consistency is vital when cat behavior training is involved. They can be stubborn if they have been allowed to do something for a long time.

cat behavior training

Curtain climbers will need an alternative to curtains. A cat condominium will give your cat somewhere else to climb instead of the curtains or plant hangers. Cat training for this problem will more than likely start as soon as you bring home the new kitty.

Kittens are adorable, but as you know, they can be a handful. They are mischievous and love to climb and explore. With the proper cat training, you can teach them right from wrong. You will find that training the kitten or an older cat will be a challenge that you have to stick with to work.

Cat training might also include teaching the cat to stay off counters. This means, you cannot allow them on the counter sometimes and not at other times. You have to be consistent when training cats. If you give them the upper hand, they will take every inch.

They are the cutest things around, but they are independent as well. They will wait for you to leave the room and try it again. Cat behavior training can be accomplished, you just need determination and a little time to train them in order to see results.

Cat Urine Issues

Cat urine issues are a very common and very frustrating experience for the cat owner. Cat urine issues come in many forms, with different solutions.

Medical Causes of Cat Urine Issues:

Some urine problems have to do not with behavior, but with feline urinary tract infections or feline lower urinary tract disease. Common signs of these an increase in the frequency of urinary or painful urination, possibly with some blood.

Male tom cats are prone to have their urethras plugged with mucus or stones, in which case this is a life threatening emergency which you should see your vet right away.

cats don't use litter box

Behavioral Causes of Cat Urine Issues:

The cat doesn’t like the litter box position, size, odor, etc. If it is one of these causes then you need to take the appropriate steps to alleviate them. Possible solution: Move the litter box, clean the litter box more frequently, place more litter boxes, or get a larger litter box.

Some cats have more anxiety than others which is another reason some cats don’t use the litter box. These could be due to a change in the household routine, a new baby, a new house guest, or a new house. Possible solutions: isolate the cat for a few days, or use Feliway.

Some cats like to mark their territory which is called marking or spraying. Although mostly intact cats to this even neutered cats can do this. Possible solutions: Have your cat neutered, use feliway to help calm them, or block the bottom of screen doors or windows to avoid them seeing other cats.

Training Your Cat to Use the Litter Box

One of the more challenging parts about pet ownership can be those first few weeks and months when you’re trying to potty train your animal. One thing to keep in mind with cat litter box training is that positive reinforcement is the best approach possible. Every time your animal successfully uses the little box, reward him with a treat or some positive attention.

Also keep in mind that you’ll have to be flexible as well. For example, if your cat is having a particularly tough time getting trained, maybe it’s not the cat’s fault.

Try changing out the litter for something that more closely replicates sand or soft dirt. This usually has a higher success rate than hard clay options. Also, use common sense. Make sure the box is cleaned regularly. If the box is full of waste or it smells unpleasant, your cat is less likely to use that box. And never use harsh chemicals or antiseptics to clean the box itself. These can also have harsh smells that will turn your cat away.

Wet Cat Food – What Makes It Different from Dry Cat Food

март 27, 2019 By liv parmel

Cats are real carnivores, always needing to eat meat based foods to maintain optimal health. They are more inclined towards natural prey whether it be birds, insects, rodents and lizards. This wildlife primarily consist of fats, proteins , having less than 10 percent of carbohydrates (fiber, starch and sugar). Cats are delicately adapted to use proteins and fats for energy, they are not like people and dogs, who are intended to utilize carbohydrates to get energy.

There are two major types of commercial foods for cats to select from, wet and dry cat food. Each of them have their own plus and minus.

People have raised the question associated with advantages of feeding slinky friend with dry food more than wet food or vice versa. Even though there are a number of advantages for both kinds, it has been discovered that wet foods are somewhat important for cats. This doesn’t mean that cats must eat wet food in every mean and even frequently. Though, it is recommended that there should be a rational intake of both few times in every week so that lack of nutritional values from wet food can be accompanied from dry food and vice versa.

Commercial wet cat food could consist of lesser grains and more proteins than dry foods. This is useful for the cats as they require large amount of proteins for nourishment and healthy growth. Wet canned food always come with greater percentage of moisture content and cats require lots of water for their bodies to keep their urinary tract and kidneys healthy. But before picking up one from the market shelf, thoroughly read their instructions and know how long wet cat food can sit out once its cap is opened.

wet cat food good or bad

Difference between dry and wet foods for cats

Dry food consists of lots of minerals that support to achieve ideal pet health. For dogs, it is recommended that dry foods are better as main course. Though, cats vary in respect because their bodies need more proteins as compared to other animals. In most situations, wet cat foods contain more proteins than that of dry foods and therefore it is necessary to consider wet cat food reviews for its particular kind for consideration. Proteins present in cats’ bodies are helpful to synthesize necessary amino acids that they are unable to get from dry foods. The amino acids generated allow your cat to grow properly and develop physiological homeostasis by body regulation. When your cat in encountered with protein deficiency, it may contain following problems as indications:

  • Weight loss
  • Subdued immune system
  • Hair and skin luster
  • Loss of appetite

There are lot more signs that may be referred to as indications even though they are most prominent. As you can see, proteins are the most significant dietary requirement for your cat.

wet or dry food for cats

Moisture content in cat food

Another reason or factor to nourish your cat with regular canned wet food is that your cat is able to receive more water content than that from dry food. Hydration level in your feline may sometimes low because their bodies are able to get water from their eating meals. By giving your cat wet foods, you are adding more moisture into their body which is good for their health and nourishment.

The health of your pet entirely depends on the intake of proteins and lower supplements for carbohydrate. Unluckily, lots of dry cat foods are manufactured with high quantity of carbohydrates. Because of this reason, a few cats feeding with dry food have greater tendency to become over weight. These dry foods can make your pet addictive for meals and it starts to eat more and more neglecting it’s eating habits.

By including more wet foods to your cat’s diet, you can really support it to lose weight. You would want to do everything to ensure proper growth, nourishment, health and nutrients. Thus, it is imperative to think about wet cat food reviews so that the best type of cat food can be made available for your pet. In this way, your cat will remain playful and happy and make you feel proud of your decision.

If you have visited different pet stores and yet not found a suitable wet cat food to feed your feline friend you must think of an alternative. You have possibly heard this a number of times when you go to veterinarian, wet food is best, it can control weight keep them healthy.Getting regular dose of wet food may help to keep your cats teeth cleaner and can keep your cat safe from obesity and other health problems, the quantity does not matter, it’s the quality that should be considered.

benefits of wet cat food

You are giving your cat wet food which they are generally meant to eat. Wet food can prevent dehydration and add significant amount of water content to their bodies in order to increase hydration level and even can be the best choice to care of urinary track health. They are basically made up of meat, which allow cats to stay healthy and protective. If your cat is inclined towards dry food that contains just 10 percent of moisture, mix some moist packet or canned food and regularly increase the intake of moist foods until it becomes happy eating canned wet food.

Prevent Cat Urinary Tract Problems

  • Cats require natural sources of raw diet of organs, meat and bones (actually small rodents or mice).
  • Cats need meat so including raw diet or converting to raw meal could be the perfect wet cat food for urinary health.

A healthy and nourishing diet for you as the trainer of your cat may include vegetables and grains but they are carnivores and are not meant to eat cereals, grain fillers and vegetables. As beautiful as this may sound they want to eat organs, meat, bones with vitamins, fibers and minerals all of them are provided in mice.

Now you will think that balance of pH can cause urinary issues, so cat food producers desiring to sell their outputs have overcome all types of acidifiers to protect cats from urinary problems. The producers are using urine acidifiers in the canned foods that can produce metabolic acidosis, ending up with improper kidney functions and lack of potassium that ultimately results to mineral inequity.

The best wet cat food for urinary health could consist of canned or raw foods, because even though your cat only wants to eat dry food and required to drink lots of water as compared to a cat that intakes wet food and therefore, does not require to drink so much water. If the cat continuously eats dry foods, its urine starts to become concentrated that can result in the urinary tract illnesses.

Cat foods for urinary tract involves canned or raw moist meals, and including naturally derived immune builders can help strengthen and make their immune system healthy and increases their bodies’ overall nutritional balance to remain your cat active and playful. This decision never disappoints you whether you give as a suggestion to someone else or apply it on your own pet.

wet foods for cat diet

If the water content is your first priority for your cat’s diet, it is not hard to know that they mostly consist of lesser quantity of carbohydrate fillers and grains than that of dry foods that are difficult for a cat to utilize and digest as they are true carnivores by nature. Note that carbohydrates are not an essential part of their diet and you will literally find large quantity in dry foods.

There are a number of people who think that high intensity heating process in the manufacturing of dry cat food can destroy all the significant nutrients that wet cat food is able to provide. People also believe that these dry foods are intended to give more fats (with their grains, fillers, carbohydrates and coating to make them more tasty and appealing) instead of wet food although they have higher calories.

On the contrary, providing dry food is mostly odorless, cheaper and faster in the home and without much hassle. You can leave the meal out for a long period of time while you are working. It is obviously the matter of more convenience and ease for people like you.

Feeding with a wet cat food could be more useful for your cat in terms of nutritional values; nonetheless it is more costly. Many specialists believe that a mixture of diet with dry and wet canned food can be utilized to offer balanced diet. The main thing to consider is you should always provide your cat with availability of clean, fresh water every day.

mix wet and dry cat food

If you are confused in selecting the perfect commercial wet food, it is recommended to go for veterinary suggestion, as your cat’s life-long fitness can be made better. You should provide every possible and best sources of nutrients you have. And while doing so, it is necessary to consider how long wet cat food can sit out when you bring it to home.

When feeding your companion cat, the logical technique is to give the diet that is closest to its prey diet. The home made diet is always the best way to achieve this, but its not very practical, using canned wet cat food is an ideal natural way of feeding which is easier. Friskies wet cat food contains higher quality of proteins and fats, while the carbohydrate content is lower than that of dry foods. The high water level raises the fluid intake of cats that remains their bladder and kidneys healthy. The high level of fats enhances their coat health and skin. Since the ingredients used can be easily utilized and digested by their bodies, canned wet food excretes lesser solid wastes in their litter box- and it is the biggest advantage to have these canned foods, isn’t it?

Another characteristic of wet cat food is variety, the hunting cats do not decide to have just purple finches one day! They will often eat preys they can catch: robins, rabbits, mice, chickadees or mice etc. similarly, you must feed your cat with a variety of set foods. Variety holds cats from getting food addicted and finicky, minimizes the possibilities of dietary in surplus or lack of any nutrient and could protect the health dangers like allergies, inflammatory bowel diseases and food intolerances. Giving a kind of dry food constantly can maximize the chances of those problems, with wet canned food it is easier to change protein sources along with flavors. So, always choose a kind of flavor and nutritional values for your cats that attract them and nourish them efficiently.

The Importance of High Protein Dry Cat Food

март 19, 2019 By liv parmel

Great animal lovers believe that taking care of a pet is quite similar to rearing a young toddler.

If you truly love your feline companion at home, you will provide your pet with only the best.

In this case, you should look for the best dry cat food in the market and feed your pet cat everyday.

You will find various brands or cat food manufacturers in the market nowadays.

Each will claim that they are the best dry cat food. Of course, you should not just take their word for it.

Which is the Best Dry Cat Food?

To help you decide, here are some of the factors that you need to consider when out shopping for high quality and delicious cat food:

Base Everything on Your Cat

If this is your first time in taking care of cat, the first thing that you should know is that you do not choose pet food according to what you want.

It should be according to what your feline pet needs.

Take note of the age of your pet, its activity and its physical circumstance.

dry cat food good or bad

Ingredients List and Nutrition Facts

You can follow some points to find a best dry cat food.

The best dry cat food must be holistic. It is the one that addresses the kitten like a whole.

This food has whole food ingredients and lot of antioxidants to satisfy the nutritional requirement of the kitten.

Always see for ingredients such as fish oil, chicken meal, grass extract and lecithin.

Always read the back label of the product that you are buying because this, perhaps, is the most important aspect of choosing the best dry cat food for your pet.

See that all the ingredients come from organic sources such as real meat, poultry or vegetables.

A good cat food must be very high in protein. Finally, it should contain beneficial additives only such as taurine and linoleic acid.

how you can find the best dry cat food

These kinds of foods will contain no “by-products” they are fundamentally the leftovers of vegetable and animal items.

It could include blood, chicken feet, by products is inferior type of protein which is not suit for human beings to consume.

So you have to keep in mind that the best dry cat food should not contain any by products.

You have to look for the food which contains lot of omega 3 oils.

This oil can be seen in different foods and they are lot of flaxseed and fish oil. These products assist the health of the skin and coat of the kitten.

They also contain so many benefits.

Choose High Protein Cat Food

The food which has lot of protein is best dry cat food. Both adult and growing kitten cannot live without taking protein.

There are many reasons why these foods are best choices for your cat.

Focusing on the nutritional content is essential since there are many cat foods that are sold cheaply but made of low quality ingredients that are not readily absorbed by the feline digestive system.

Going cheap can also make your pet feel “empty” after a meal, because the product did not satisfy the basic nutritional requirement of your cat, such as protein.

In spite of being domesticated for ages, cats are still carnivorous by nature.

By proportion, a dry cat food for indoor cats should have more protein contents, since a cat requires more of them than some other domesticated animals.

There are particular enzymes in animal liver that help in the breakdown of proteins. In cats, such enzymes are constantly active.

Some of the protein processed by a cat’s liver is used to fuel these liver enzymes, raising the protein requirements of your feline companion.

The protein requirement ratio of cats also goes higher as they mature.

As compared to other pets, such as dogs that have lesser protein requirements as they get older, cats have substantially higher protein ratio even as adults.

Thus, if you are looking for the best dry cat food, make sure that it contains around 2/3 of the protein requirement cats have as kittens.

The best dry cat food should have high protein content and it should be taken from animal source.

Many cat food products can be sold cheaply because their protein content is vegetable based, which is not ideal for felines.

The reason is that cats are obligate carnivores. This means that they have rather strict requirements for high-level protein that is animal based.

A cat does not have certain enzyme pathways that prevent efficient utilization of plant-based protein.

In addition, protein derived from plant sources do not have many of the amino acids that are needed by cats for a healthy existence.

With the animal protein contained in the best dry cat food, you can be sure that your feline pet will get all the amino acids that it needs.

How to Find the Best Dry Cat Food?

Let us admit that cost is a very important factor in shopping for the best cat food. Do remember though, that expensive does not immediately mean high quality.

Cheap does not necessarily mean unsatisfactory, either. But do make sure that the cat food will be within your budget so that you can buy it as often as your pet needs it.

Besides taking note of all the information provided above when out shopping, one of the ways on how you can find the best dry cat food is reading real consumer reviews about each and then comparing one to the other.

But do take note that your cat is unique from others, with particular needs. Therefore, to find the best dry cat food for your pet, you might want to try everything on the shelf.

Sooner or later, you will find the perfect match for your pet.

How do You Choose the Right Kind of Dry Cat Food for Your Cat?

The following information are usually enough to allow you to make an good choice.

Step 1:

What Age is Your Cat?

The cat food industry generally classifies cats the following categories: Kitten, Adult, Mature and Senior.

  • Kittens:

Kittens are defined as cats up to one years of age. They are usually quite active and need higher levels of nutrients as compared to Adults.

The food formulated for kittens are usually higher in protein, minerals and vitamins.

  • Adult Cats:

Adults are defined as cats from one year to seven years of age.

Their energy need are quite varied depending on their lifestyles, but dry food formulations for adults tend to be lower in proteins, minerals and vitamins as compared to Kitten formulas.

  • Mature Cats:

Mature Cats are defined as cats from seven years to eleven or twelve years of age, depending on the manufacturer.

Formulations for this age group have nutrients that aim to reduce the stress on the liver and kidneys.

Do note that not all manufacturers target this age group of cats, or have products that span the age groups of both Adult and Mature cats.

cat food

  • Senior Cats:

Senior Cats are defined as cats from eleven/twelve years old and above.

Formulations for this age group focus on keeping the senior cat as healthy as possible by increasing certain proportion of nutrients.

Again, not all manufacturers of dry cat foods cater to this age range, or have products that span multiple age ranges.

Step 2:

What Lifestyle Does Your Cat Lead?

Again, the cat food industry has ready classifications for your cat’s activity levels and lifestyle.

They are as follows:

  • Active/Normal

This is defined as your normal cat with normal amounts of activity.

Personally I am not sure what it means to be a ‘normal’ cat.

Cats have their own personality and I feel that it is difficult to define.

Anyway, the food formulation in this category is what the manufacturers think are the ideal for a normal cat.

  • Sedentary (Light)

If your cat has a sedentary lifestyle, then it falls into this category.

The formulation that cat food manufacturers create for this category is usually known as ‘Light’.

This type of food is good for portion control and losing weight as they have ingredients, usually fibre, to satisfy a cat’s hunger.

  • Indoor

The indoor cat is one who just stays indoors.

The formulation takes into consideration that the cat may not be really active, but the food’s caloric content is slightly higher than that of the Light formulations.

benefits of dry cat food

Step 3:

What is Your Cat’s Current State?

  • Neutered / Spayed

Cats have reduced energy needs after they are spayed or neutered. This means that their caloric need correspondingly reduces.

However, they may eat just as much as before, and would beg for food if they feel hungry.

Manufacturers do have products specifically targeted at spayed and neutered cats and do actively promote them.

I find that they are not much different from the Indoor or Light formulations, but that’s just my opinion.

  • Pregnant and Nursing Cats

Before starting on any new diet for pregnant cats, I strongly suggest that your veterinarian be consulted for the best kind of food for your cat.

Manufacturers usually recommend that you feed a pregnant or nursing cat either kitten food or to increase their caloric and nutrient intake through increased meals.

Whatever you feed your pregnant or nursing cat, do take into consideration that their nutritional needs have increased.

Step 4:

Determining the Most Suitable Dry Cat Food

Armed with the above information, you can now make a decision on what dry cat food to get for your cat.

With the exception of the pregnant or nursing cats, it is quite simple to pick up a cat food that matches the age and lifestyle of your cat.

As the food is new to your cat, do purchase the smallest packet possible just in case the food is unsuitable for your cat, or if your cat rejects it.

The next step is where you find out if the dry cat food that you bought based on the Steps 1 to 3 is suitable for your cat.

feed your cat with the new cat food

Step 5:

Observing Your Cat’s Physiological Reaction

Before you feed your cat with the new cat food, take some time to do the following:

  • Weigh your cat.
  • Feel your cat to see if you can feel her ribs.

The above two steps will give you a benchmark to determine if the food you just bought is suitable for your cat.

Unfortunately, there is no way to tell until you feed your cat.

Here are the steps I take when introducing new food to my cats.

Mix the new food with old food in increasing proportions over a week or two. This is to let the cat get used to the new food.

Observe their poop after they feed. Yes, it is a nasty job, but please do it just in case the food causes digestive problems.

Signs to look out for are diarrhea and bloody stools.

Diarrhea over a short term is still acceptable as the cat may not be used to the new food, but not for too long as it will dehydrate the cat.

Bloody stools means that the new food may not suitable – bring your cat to the veterinarian immediately.

Feel for the cats’ ribs weekly.

If the ribs start to disappear under a layer of flesh, it is time to reduce the feed quantity or to change to a food with lower calories per kibble.

If the ribs become more pronounced, either increase the quantity or change to a food with a higher calories per kibble.

importance of dry cat food

Weigh your cat weekly.

If your cat’s body weight shows an increase, it is time to reduce the feed quantity or to change to a food with lower calories per kibble.

If the body weight of your cat decreases, either increase the quantity or change to a food with higher calories per kibble.

If the cat rejects the food outright, you’ll have to get some other type of cat food. This happens sometimes.

That is why I advise you to get the smallest packet of a new cat food when trying it out.

Signs of rejection include:

  • Munching on the new food for a while and then letting it drop back into the bowl.
  • Eating only her old food and not touching her new food.
  • She may pick out the old kibble for consumption while leaving the new kibble in the bowl.

Siamese cat for pet

The Siamese is one of the oldest and best known breeds of cat in the world today. Originating from Southeast Asia, they are believed to have descended from temple cats of Siam (now Thailand) in the 1800s.

As well as having a personality distinctly different to other breeds, they are striking cats, with stunning blue eyes and a distinctive meow.

These cats suit many owners as they are very loving, friendly and social animals.

They love to be part of a family and mix well with children and dogs but take note – if you are looking for a quiet ‘knee-sitter’ you may find them overpowering, noisy, bossy and demanding.

Siamese Cat Breed History

The Siamese cat, with its distinctive coloration, brilliant blue eyes, inquisitive nature and social personality, is one of the more popular cat breeds.

As the name indicates, these cats arrived from Thailand (Siam), Kept as regal pets by the King of Siam, they lived in the confinement of the palace, which allowed for the development of a new breed of Colorpoint blue eyed cats.

This types of cat is a very social cat, they are intelligent and curious and will explore every nook and cranny of their homes and surroundings, they are also very vocal with probably the loudest voices in the cat world, making noises which often sound very much like a human baby crying, owners often claim that they have conversations with their cats who often make very long speeches!

Faults such as these are occurring less these days as selective breeding programs further improve the Siamese lines.

Siamese enjoy being around people in general, and are in constant search for attention. They are very loyal friends, and will please your time without wanting something back other then your company.

The body, tail and legs of a wedge-head Siamese are long and graceful, with large ears on a wedge shaped head.

The apple-heads are bigger-boned, with a more compact body and an apple shaped head.

The traditional Apple head Siamese

The original Siamese was imported Siam (also known as Thailand). His face and body are round, his bones are big and he is heavy.

The traditional Siamese was given the nickname “Apple-head” because his head resembles the shape of an apple.

The traditional Siamese also have a dip in the nose that can be seen in profile.

The classic Siamese was the second Siamese that was imported from Siam.

He is a medium-size Siamese, his head is wedge-shaped with a little bit more elongated body, tail and legs then the traditional Siamese.

The Wedge Siamese is much elongated and its appearance is far more extreme than traditional and classic Siamese.

Its head is a wedge shaped, extremely sharp and pointed, almost every part of the body is slender and long: the head, neck, tail and legs.

His ears are very large and sharp, and his eyes are in the form of almonds. This Siamese is the only species people genetically modified.

The coat of Siamese cat is based on the cream color and can have one of four colors: lilac point, seal point, blue point or chocolate point, and these are the 4 colors that are accepted in all associations around the world.

The color appears on the Siamese cat’s nose, ears, paws and tail.

This appearance of part creamy and part pointed is a result of a mutation of an enzyme that is involved in the melanin production, and this enzyme can not work at a normal body temperature, only in cool temperature.

The Siamese cat is pointed in his face and legs only because these parts are being cooled by the passage of air through the Siamese cat’s sinuses.

Because of his special traits, the Siamese cat actually has dark points for camouflage on his coat.

He is much less active at night then most cats, his hearing ability gets reduced in time (although most Siamese are not deaf) and because blue eyes are in lack of structure which increases blurry light in other cat breeds.

Tyndall phenomenon

The Siamese cat’s eyes are blue due to the partial albinism gene.

The Siamese has very little pigment in the eyes, sometimes no pigment at all, and the color blue is actually a reflection of white light from the Retina.

The strength of the blue color in the Siamese cat’s eyes can range from pale-blue to deep blue-violet.

All colors of Siamese cat

Seal Point Siamese Cat:

Seal point was the first Siamese that was brought to United States. His original name was „Royal and he was not considered a real Siamese because his colors were not strong at that time.

Colors: Fawn to cream, on the belly and chest the colors are lighter. The eyes are deep blue.

Points: Deep brown almost black, nose leather and paws pads are at the same color as the points.

Lilac Point Siamese Cat:

Lilac point Siamese was accepted by the CFA in 1950, but is still quite rare.

Colors: Glacial white with no shedding, the eyes are bright blue. As a lilac point Siamese ages, his body still remains in very light colors. They are actually the lightest Siamese of all 4 colors.

Points: The coloring is very light, nose leather and paws pads are lavender-pink.

Chocolate Point Siamese Cat:

Chocolate point Siamese was also accepted by the CFA in 1950, although they exist almost as long as the seal point Siamese.

Colors: White to ivory with no shedding. As the chocolate point Siamese ages, the contrast between the body and the points gets noticeable. The eyes are deep blue.

Points: Milk chocolate brawn, his nose leather and paws pads are cinnamon-pink.

Blue Point Siamese Cat:

Blue point Siamese was accepted by the CFA in 1930 and became the second recognized point color Siamese.

Colors: Bluish-white. The eyes are bright blue. As the blue point Siamese ages, the contrast between the body and the points gets noticeable.

Points: Gray, nose leather and paw pads are slate gray.

Siamese cats kittens

Siamese kittens:

When the Siamese is still a kitten, his coat is pure white or cream.

In the first few months of his life he starts to develop some bright points, which become very clear when the kitten is four weeks old, then, you can know for sure what color your Siamese have.

If you are living in a country with very warm climate, your Siamese points will be brighter (again, because of the enzyme that is sensitive to heat).

Siamese Cat Behavior

The behavior characteristics of the Siamese are similar throughout the breed, regardless of which body shape they have.

Their meow, intelligence, and ability to be trained make them one of the most unique types of cats. And so should their name be. If you are brainstorming for a unique name, you can find really cool names for Siamese cats on cat names portals, such as the CatNamesUnique portal.

They are typically loyal, affectionate and can be trained, and in some ways bridge the gap between cats and dogs.

These cats sometimes get themselves in trouble if left alone for long periods of time.

Being highly intelligent and inquisitive, they can learn how to open doors or cupboards, and with their love of heights, they think nothing of climbing up curtains to see what is at the top.

Perhaps the most fascinating thing about the Siamese is their seemingly endless ability to learn new tricks and behaviors, which means life with a Siamese is always surprising and rewarding.

Just as with humans, a Siamese can be extroverted or introverted, and this aspect of their personality should also be considered when choosing from a number of Siamese cats for sale.

Look for whether a cat or kitten seems interested in human attention, or if they try to run and hide.

Struggling when being picked up can indicate that a kitten hasn’t been socialised well with humans, and may grow into a cat that is fearful of strangers.

And what a pity it would be if you couldn’t show visitors your beautiful, unique Siamese!

The average life expectancy of the Siamese is around 10 to 12.5 years.

These numbers imply a considerably lengthier probable life expectancy when compared with lots of other breeds, and without a doubt a lot of Siamese cats typically reach their late teens and early 20s.

март 15, 2019 By liv parmel

Cats are one of the most loved pets in the animal world. There are tons of different types of cats but in this article I will be focusing on domesticated cats. Domesticated cats are known to be small, furry felines that are loved and valued by people for their companionship and much more.

Domesticated cats enjoy living in a home and being around their owners or not. A cats personality can be considered finicky at times. Sometimes cat will be playful and other times, you may not even be able to find them because they like seeking solace away from people. Persian Cats Breeds and Care

фебруар 15, 2019 By liv parmel

Persian cat breeds are known for their beautiful hair, adorable look, and exquisite personality. This breed of cat is an ancient breed and originated from the middle east. Over the years, Persian cat breeds were preferred and loved by many people worldwide, especially in the US. The cats are medium sized and normally weigh between 8 and 12 pounds and have a life-span of up to 15 years.

This captivating and precious cat breed is known for its adorable and innocent look. Children and babies normally interact with this adorable cat breed, due to the friendly nature they possess. Whether cuddling, petting or having elegant princess tea parties, children find Persian cat breeds fascinating. Not only do they capture the interest of children, but they really entice guests also. If a friend or relative drops by, this cat breed seems to enchant that individual with the appealing charm that they possess.

Majority of Persian cats carry an aura around with them. Their personality is much more of a sophisticated, dignified and graceful one. They would rather be in a soft, quiet and peaceful environment with little or no noise at all. There will be no need to worry about this breed of cat climbing drapery, trying to snatch fishes from your aquarium or stealing food from your counters. This breed will rather be calm and composed, while it remains in its territory.

The procedure of caring for a Persian cat is not hard but does require self-discipline. The long hair of a Persian cat needs adequate combing and brushing, in order to keep the hair from tangling up. Brushing and combing every day is prescribed to keep the hair clean and straight. Bathing this type of cat breed is also another requisite.

Sometimes dirt gets caught up in the hair and it may discolor it, Persian cats should have a bath at least twice a month so that they will look clean and fresh at all times. The teeth should be brushed regularly so that dental complications and diseases will not occur.

Persian cat for pet

Another key factor in caring for Persian cats is keeping the litter box clean at all times. As noted above, Persians cats walk with an aura, that also includes good hygiene. If the litter box is too dirty it will only force the cat to reject it and seek for another way to empty their waste, which you really want to avoid.

Taking care of a Persian Cat

The Persian cat has luxuriously long fur and therefore it is necessary to properly maintain her coat. You do this by brushing the cat’s fur daily if possible and from an early age. It would also help if you can do this routinely before mealtime to help the cat associate the brushing with something she enjoys, that is, getting food.

When brushing the cat’s fur, it is best to use a metal comb with two edges: one that has teeth with narrow spaces and the other edge with teeth widely spaced because it will allow you to properly detangle the cat’s fur. A slicker-type brush can is the best to get rid of fur with a tendency to get tangled up.How you comb the fur is also very important.

It is recommended that you separate the fur with the widely spaced teeth so you can brush out the loose knots and ease the process of detangling the knots. It is also necessary to comb the tangled hairs from the root to the tip of the hair as it is considered the best way of brushing the cat’s fur as opposed to just combing the top of the cat’s coat.

In addition, you are advised to work in sections as you brush and progress from the head down to the tail as this helps to get rid of loose hairs. And then after clearing the fur that has been removed by the comb, it is advised that you go over the fur a second time with the widely spaced teeth edge, and the last step is brushing your cat’s coat of fur with the narrow-toothed edge of the comb.

Persian cat breeds

The reason why these tips are recommended is that tangled fur can form clumps which pull the cat’s skin, making her feel unpleasant or it can increase skin infections because the matted fur makes it harder for the cat to wipe the skin which is under the far that has gotten tangled up. In the case that you cannot handle your cat’s tangled fur, you are advised to seek to find a groomer who is professionally trained and recognized.

Persian cats are brachycephalic meaning that respiratory chambers are foreshortened in relation to other cats so the Persians are predisposed to respiratory infections. So to keep respiratory problems away from your Persian, it is recommended that you get the cat vaccinated regularly. In addition, it is necessary to keep the cat’s nose clean using a warm or wet cloth. You can wipe it once daily and whenever the nose looks even slightly blocked.

Persian’s shortened noses also make their tear ducts kinked and this means that the ducts are not able to effectively allow tear fluid to drain away. This can irritate the cat’s eyes so it is advised that you wipe away your cat’s excess tears with a towel once daily and whenever you notice any wetness under her eyes. However, be careful not to clean the eye to avoid eye infections.

Choose food for cat: Which is the best?

фебруар 4, 2019 By liv parmel

The latest statistics are revealing that a great many of America’s pets are obese, from years of being fed table scraps and the wrong kinds of food. Therefore, picking the proper cat food for your feline is not a decision to be considered lightly!

Make no mistake about it, cats, dogs, and other of our favorite pets can suffer from many of the same consequences as humans do from obesity: diabetes, heart problems, strokes, and other debilitating conditions.

Choosing the best cat food can be difficult. There are just so many brands to choose from! It can be intimidating selecting the right meal for your feline. What brand uses natural ingredients? Which brand provides all of the proper nutrients? And, of course, which brand will your cat like the taste of?

All Natural Ingredients

Selecting a brand with all natural ingredients is very important when picking the best cat food. Would you eat a meal that is filled with artificial ingredients and preservatives? Hopefully the answer is no! Now ask yourself if you would want those substances in your cats food. Choosing a cat food with all the proper ingredients insures you are providing your cat with a meal that will allow them to lead a long and healthy life.

Nutrients

Another important factor to consider when choosing the ideal cat food is the nutrients it provides. In our society we spend hours reading the labels on the back of the container our food came in. Shouldn’t we do the same with the food we provide for our cat?

Taste

And last, but certainly not least, selecting a brand of cat food that your feline will enjoy is the last step in picking the perfect meal. This will be more difficult because each cat has their favorite tastes.

Natural Cat Foods are the Best Cat Food

In today’s society, the overwhelming majority of people feed their cats one variety of commercial cat food or another, whether it comes in the form of dry crackers out of a bag, or moist food from a can. These cat foods have their pros and cons, which we will discuss in a moment.

cats feeding

But first, if we want to understand what kind of food would provide a cat with optimal nutrition, we need to look at Natural Cat Foods — that is, their prey. The fact of the matter is even though your cat may be a cuddly, domesticated animal, its biological requirements, which include its nutritional needs, were shaped over thousands of years of evolution.

Cats, in contrast to humans or even dogs, are pure carnivores — in the wild they feed on small rodents, and the like. About the only exception to this is a few blades of grass a cat may chew on every now and again — which some experts have speculated is for digestion.

best food for cats

The point here is that natural cat foods — the best cat food there is — are fresh meat sources, not processed, refined, or cooked commercial cat food. However, because the majority of cats spend much, if not all, of their time indoors, buying cat food is simply a matter of necessity.

In addition, cats who spend a lot of times indoors tend to live much longer than cats who live totally outdoors because they avoid numerous hazards such as automobile traffic, predators, and hunting traps.

In any case, your goal is to choose the best cat food — that is, one that comes closest to the natural cat foods that felines feast on in the wild.

Wellness Cat Food

Out of all the different choices, canned is generally the best cat food you can buy simply because it usually comes closest to the composition of natural cat foods.

Canned cat food is generally made with a higher degree of animal-protein ingredients (usually organ meats such as kidney and liver). These meat sources will help better supply your cat with nutrients that are crucial for its health, such as the essential amino acid taurine and fatty acids.

cats feeding

In contrast, dry cat foods, such as crackers, are often comprised of more vegetable-based or grain-based matter. Again, cats are not biologically designed to eat vegetable or grain matter, and doing so is not conducive to their optimal health. The drawback of canned cat foods, however, is that they do not stay fresh for long once opened.

So, from a convenience standpoint, dry foods are often the best if you have to leave your cat unattended for long periods of time — moist food from the can would spoil if left out for too long, and possibly cause your cat to fall ill.

Even if you feed your cat canned foods, it’s important to switch brands every once in a while, because the nutritional make up of different brands vary. By occasional switching, therefore, you will help protect your cat from nutritional deficiencies.

Canned Cat Food

Canned cat food normally consist of some kind of meat or fish and gel, dyes, salt, preservatives, sugar, water and sometimes corn. The benefits of buying canned cat food are that it is normally okay nutritious.

The cons are that it is very expensive and cats who only eat canned cat food also build up plaque and tartar quicker, because the food is soft and the cat does not use its teeth then.

The vitamin content of the food will also decrease if the food stand too long, especially in warm places, because vitamins like B-vitamins does not stand warm.

It consist less water than canned cat food and is has a much better durability. And your cat won’t get tartar as easy if it eats dry food.

The cons are that the fat count in the dry food often is too low for the cat.

Dry cat food is also suspected for coursing bladder and urinary problems, if the cats diet only consist of dry food. If the cat gets a lot of dry food, make sure that is always have clean water, or even better soften the dry food with water or milk.

The best thing is to give your cat a bit of dry cat food, to prevent tartar.

Wet Cat Food

Because wet food contains no rendered bi-product, they usually have higher levels of proteins and other nutrients and far less potentially harmful filler although they still contain many types of animal products that are not deemed safe for human consumption.

Wet cat food is made following a computer monitored recipe that is ” cooked ” often right in the cans where commercial stabilization takes place. The additional moisture in wet food is also better for your cat.

Common things to watch for in pets

јануар 28, 2019 By liv parmel

Since our pets can’t talk to us when they aren’t feeling well, it’s up to the owner to recognize the signs a pet is showing when something is wrong. And the sooner an owner can recognize there is a problem the sooner the pet can be treated, which may help prevent a mild problem from becoming a serious one.

Here is my list of simple things that all pet owners should be able to recognize and should check their pet for on a regular basis.

Increased thirst and urination

This is the most common sign of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, adrenal gland disease, or kidney disease. Any pet that is drinking and urinating more than normal should have a urinalysis and blood panel.

Weight gain

Many pets are overweight or obese which is very unhealthy and leads to all sorts of medical problems and ultimately shortening the pet’s life. Some pets with a rapid weight gain may be suffering from a metabolic disease such as hypothyroidism or adrenal gland disorders and should be examined and have the proper diagnostic blood tests performed.

things to watch for in cats health

Weight loss

This is a significant sign that owners should watch for. Common causes include malnutrition, parasites, cancer and hyperthyroidism in cats.

Change in appetite

This may be coupled with weight gain or loss. Cats that have an increased appetite but are losing weight need to be tested for hyperthyroidism. Animals that have a decreased appetite coupled with lethargy, diarrhea, and/or vomiting need immediate attention.

Urination

Can your animal pee? Sounds like a silly question, but when was the last time you observed your animal urinating? Owners that walk their dog daily are able to, but cat owners and people who have outdoor dogs may not recognize that there is a problem until it has gone on for several days and the pet is really sick.

Male cats and dogs (esp. Dalmatians) may become blocked by stones and become unable to urinate. Cats may sit in the litter box for long periods of time and dogs may go about the yard lifting their leg multiple times or squatting with only a dribble of urine coming out. These signs may indicate a life-threatening emergency and require immediate attention.

Increased attempts to urinate, straining, urinating in the house or outside of the litter-box or blood in the urine all signify that there is a problem. Owners should frequently monitor their pet’s urination so that they will know right away if there is a problem.

important things to watch for in dogs health

Defecation

As with urination, many owners don’t observe their pet when it’s defecating and have no idea of the status of their animal’s stool or defecation habits. Stools can be soft, watery, hard, bloody or have worms or mucus in it. The pet may also be straining (or unable) to defecate. And it could be days before it’s noticed if the pet is let out unsupervised in the yard. Cats frequently develop chronic constipation and may not have a bowel movement for days, which can become a serious problem.

Again, owners should frequently monitor their pet’s defecation habits so as to recognize when there is a problem as early as possible.

Scooting or licking at the rear end

Dogs and cats have anal sacs, a pair of „glands“ at the 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions in the anal wall. These glands produce a thin, smelly secretion that is normally emptied when the pet defecates. Some animals may overproduce the secretion and „express“ them resulting in a foul, „musky“ odor in the house. The sacs can also become infected, blocked or abscessed. The typical sign that there is an anal sac problem is that the animal drags its butt across the floor in an attempt to itch itself. Some animals will also lick at their anal area too.

Toenails

Have you checked your pet’s toenails lately? You can seen nails grow so long that they curl around and pierce the pad and cause an infection. Long toenails can also splay the toes out making it difficult and painful for the animal to walk. Long nails are also more likely to get caught on something and ripped out or broken off. Some animals need to have their toenails trimmed on a regular basis and if the owner is reluctant to do it the pet should be taken to a veterinarian or groomer as needed.

Cat Home Safety Tips

јануар 22, 2019 By liv parmel

It’s never an easy time for an owner when their pet is sick or injured. Many people consider their pet to be a close family member, and when it is ill, it is a time of tremendous stress and worry, not only for the pet’s health, but often times, also for the cost of treatment.

What can make it even worse for the owner is when they realize that they either caused or could have prevented their pet’s illness or injury. Now they are faced with terrible feelings of guilt in addition to everything else.

While it is impossible to prevent every accident or illness from happening, pet owners can take steps to minimize the chances that their pet will be injured or made ill. Here are some tips to help keep your cat healthy.

petsium cat image

Be careful with needles and thread

Even though it can be quite cute, cats should never be allowed to play with string, thread, tinsel, floss or yarn. Barbs on the tongue make it very difficult for cats to spit the string out and they may end up swallowing it. As it is swallowed the thread may get wrapped around the base of the tongue resulting in a „linear foreign body“.

The normal peristaltic waves of the GI tract carry the ends of the thread through the stomach and into the intestines. Since the thread can not pass through the GI tract because it is caught under the tongue, it acts like a saw, cutting into the intestines as they move around it, trying to propel it forward. Emergency surgery is required to relieve this type of obstruction. Cat owners that like to sew or do needlepoint need to be extra careful.

Be extra careful with medications

Cats are extremely sensitive to many common human medicines. For instance, as little as one Tylenol [R] (acetaminophen) tablet can be fatal to a cat. This ingredient is also present in many other brands of pain reliever. Always check with your veterinarian before giving your cat any medication. And be sure to keep all of your medicines stored safely. A loose tablet on a counter or night stand could make an interesting but deadly play toy for your cat if it were to be ingested.

cat safety tips

Window safety

Drapery and window blind cords present a serious risk of hanging to cats (and small dogs and toddlers). The dangerous type are the double cords that loop at the bottom. If the animal slips it’s head in between the 2 cords, it can very easily get twisted up and suffocated or hung. To avoid this situation I recommend cutting the loop and having 2 single cords dangling.

Kitchen Safety

Every cat owner knows that their pet is a pretty agile little creature. Cats can jump up onto counters or sneak into the tiniest of places, often times without being seen. Owners with electric stoves need to be especially careful since the coils remain hot for sometime after the burner is shut off. Many cats have suffered severe burns to their foot pads after jumping up onto a hot stove top.

Cat owners should also check the dishwasher (and clothes dryer) before turning these appliances on. Cats can sneak into the open appliance and become trapped when it is closed. The animal would be severely injured or killed if the appliance were to be turned on. Be careful when cooking. Try not to let your kitty walk around your feet when you are cooking at the stove. A spilled pot of hot water or cup of tea or coffee could cause a severe burn.

petsium cats image

Avoid onions

Cats should not be fed table foods that contain either fresh or cooked onions as there is a risk of causing damage to the red blood cells resulting in anemia. Some brands of baby food contain onion powder which can also cause the same problem. Owners with babies should take care not to leave the infant’s food out where the cat can lick up the leftovers.

Houseplants

Cats also love to chew on houseplants, some of which can be poisonous. Injuries include mouth ulcers, diarrhea and vomiting, cardiac effects, neurologic disease, and death. The list of poisonous plants is quite long. Some of the more common house plants that can be toxic include Rhododendron, Philodendron, Easter and Tiger Lily’s, Poinsettia and Mistletoe. Pet shops sell cat grasses that can be grown inside and are safe for cats to chew on.

Insecticides

A common cause of accidental poisoning in cats is the application of a store bought flea product not specifically labeled for use in cats. Symptoms include excessive salivation, diarrhea and vomiting, and muscle tremors often confused as seizures. Never use a product that says „For Dogs Only“ on a cat.

Dental Disease in Pets

So, does anyone know what the #1 disease of dogs and cats is? Here are some hints. It is so pervasive that 80-90% of animals over age 4 suffer from some degree of it. It can vary in severity from mild to a more serious condition causing pain, discomfort and possibly involving other organ systems.

It is also one of the most overlooked conditions by pet owners and until recently many veterinarians. Know what it is yet? Answer: dental disease.

Periodontal Disease in Pets

How does it start? Periodontal disease starts with oral bacteria adhering to the surface of a tooth and forming plaque, a slimy film which builds up and eventually mineralizes to form tartar.

Plaque starts on the surface of the tooth but eventually works its way between the tooth and the gum leading to inflammation of the gums called gingivitis. Mild gingivitis appears as a thin red line in the gum just above the tooth. Severe gingivitis is characterized by very red, swollen, thickened and painful gums. Gingivitis is reversible if treated early enough.

Left untreated, gingivitis will progress to periodontitis, which is the inflammation and destruction of the ligamentous and bony support tissues of the teeth. Periodontitis results in severe mouth pain, loose teeth and bacterial infection of the tooth socket. And once infection sets in, the animal’s breath will have a terrible odor to it.

The mouth is loaded with bacteria and as the gums become inflamed, the bacteria around the teeth are free to enter the blood stream and travel to other organs in the body. The heart is a frequent target of oral bacteria. The bacteria can colonize the valves in the heart making them leaky (which is heard as a heart murmur).

Small breed dogs seem to be more susceptible to developing more severe dental disease at an earlier age, while most larger breed dogs are more resistant. Cats infected with FIV ( Feline immunodeficiency virus) may have severe gingivitis.

Check Your Pet Teeth At Home

So what is an owner to do? First of all, if your pet will allow it, take a look at its teeth. „Flip the Lip“ and look for tartar build up, a thin red line just above the tooth, or red and puffy gums. Look for gum recession, bleeding, broken or chipped teeth and oral masses. Make sure you check the back teeth too. If you see any of the above your pet needs to be seen by your veterinarian for treatment.

Many owners are reluctant to have a dental cleaning in their pet because it requires the use of general anesthesia. Unlike us, dogs and cats won’t lay still to have their teeth cleaned, and if they bit down they could hurt someone or break a tooth on metal instruments. Almost always, the risk of dental disease far outweighs the risk of anesthesia.

Of course, certain precautions can minimize the risks of anesthesia before a dental cleaning. Pre-anesthesia lab work can identify liver or kidney problems. And using an IV catheter and fluids during the procedure helps to prevent hypotension (low blood pressure) from developing.

How Often Does an Pets Need to Have its Teeth Cleaned?

Ideally, animals should have their teeth cleaned yearly after they are 3 or 4 years old. Smaller breed dogs may need more frequent cleanings to keep their mouth healthy.

Owners can help maintain good oral hygiene brushing their pets teeth regularly with special toothpaste formulated for animals. Oral rinses, CET chews, Greenies and specialized tartar control foods can also help minimize plaque and tartar buildup.
